“Yummy!”

The paninis were wonderful. They serve McCann's oatmeal and have an entire cabinet full of add-ins, they even let my husband have oatmeal for lunch.

“Delicious spot in college town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2013 via mobile

As we walked down the revived College Avenue we spotted Cena. As suggested we made a reservation. When we returned, we had a really terrific server who was knowledgeable, paced the meal and had a quick sense of humor. The food was simply outstanding. The portions were great and the ingredient combos were inspired. We enjoyed everything. They accommodated a gluten allergy without problem. Really great meal!

“Consistently great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

We've eaten here many times and think of it as one of the four-truly good restaurants in Appleton. It's a pleasant room and the service is generally very good. The chef is inventive, and the menu changes with the seasons. Best dinner for our money is the Lamb Osso Buco. It's currently off the menu, but will likely return with the return of cold weather. Scallops seem always to be on the menu; they are excellent. I also recommend the tomato bisque. There is a nice selection of wine and beer. The bar is also a pleasant place for a meal. If the dining room is busy, eat at the bar.

“Good food, slow service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

This is a small, cozy restaurant. Reservations are a good idea. On a recent Saturday, we were seated immediately upon arrival for our 6:30 reservation, but it was ten minutes before anyone even came with water. It was another 10 minutes before someone came to take our drink order. (We didn't seem to have one server. Different people kept stopping by.)
It was a very long time before our wine came -- a red, which was served unpleasantly warm, almost as if it had been sitting in someone's car in the sun.
We ordered the mussels appetizer. They were fabulous, large and delicious. We ordered dinner -- two seafood pastas, steak, and scallops. This also took a very long time. The pasta didn't seem to come with all the ingredients we remembered as listed on the menu, but at this point it was two hours from the time we sat down and no one wanted to ask for a menu to check. The pasta was still very good. The scallops were perfectly cooked. The steak was fine.I would try it again. Considering the number of tables and servers, I'm not sure why they were "in the weeds" all night, as one of the servers who passed our table kept telling us.

“Very good meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2013 via mobile

Cena is located in an old storefront in downtown. We initially drove past the restaurant (note: the name is on the window and not on the awning). The quaint interior is exposed brick with wooden floors. The restaurant is deep and somewhat narrow with a large bar near the entrance.

Although there was a considerable wait for the server to finally appear at our table, he was apologetic for the delay and very efficient from that point forward. Our appetizers arrived quickly and were a good start to the meal. Our group ordered different salads for our next course. These were well received, but nothing special. The kitchen redeemed themselves with the entrees. Our table had pork, chicken and scallops dishes. All three were spectacular. The food ranked among our best meals in Appleton.

The main issue that prevents me from giving Cena a "5" is that near the end of our dinner, cigarette smoke from the bar area became very noticeable at our table. We found this a disappointing way to end an otherwise very enjoyable meal.
