“An appalling hotel that overbooks and leaves its guests stranded.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2012

Avoid this hotel at all costs. We had a confirmed booking with the hotel. They overbooked but failed to attempt to find alternative accommodation which they are required to do. The hotel shows no compassion towards its guests. There is no concept of customer service at all.

We highly appreciated our stay at this pousada. Before our stay we were already contacted by Claudio, the manager, asking us for our room preferences. Claudio turned out a perfect host, who took time to give us precious advice on the cultural activities going on that week and developing some options. By following his suggestions we had some amazing insights! The little street from the hotel to the old town was guarded day and night by a policeman on duty, which gave us a safe feeling. Everything worked: the rooms were clean, the beds very comfortable, the breakfast was fine. Good Wifi, and nice swimming pool. Claudio and his crew gave us a great stay! We can strongly recommend Mangueira !

We stayed at the Pousada da Mangueira for three nights at the start of our Brazil vacation ($116/night, high season) because we wanted a place that was convenient for exploring the historic Pelourinho district. After reading other reviews, I had trouble visualizing where the pousada was relative to the Pelourinho, so I will try to describe it here. The Pelourinho is a large, flat topped hill that is boarded to the west by a sharp drop to the harbour and to the east by an equally sharp gulley. Lago da Saúde is a narrow cobble stone street that cuts down the side of that gulley and up the adjoining hill; the pousada is located half way up the hill. It consists of a long, narrow two-storey motel-like building on a narrow terrace that parallels the gulley and faces the back of the Pelourinho. The lobby is a few steps up from the street, and off the lobby, there is a small but very nice (and nicely maintained) pool that has a fabulous view of the Pelourinho’s tall, narrow pastel-coloured buildings. At night, you hear the sounds of drums and music as the Olodum and other schools practice for Carnival – loud enough to know you are in Brazil but not so loud that your sleep is disturbed.

Our room was small but recently renovated and meticulously maintained, with a safe, small flat screen TV, frigobar and air conditioner (no fan); the bed was a queen-size with springs and very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious, with a large shower with a rain-fall shower head. There are several small mini-marts at the top of the hill (about 75 m) where you can buy beer and juices to restock your frigobar. Breakfast is served on the terrace by the pool, a nice selection of scrambled eggs and sausages, fruits, cold cuts, pastries and juices. There is also a drinking water fountain on the terrace.

The manager speaks English and is extremely helpful, providing his own custom designed map and a briefing where he points out the location of tourist attractions, good restaurants, cambios, free concerts and, most importantly, areas to avoid at night. He even supplies free “fitas do Bonfim,” colourful wish-ribbons that you tie on your wrist, so you won’t be hassled by street vendors trying to “give” them to you then demanding money.

We planned our arrival for a Tuesday, the night that a lot of free entertainment happens. We walked into Pelourinho (about 5 min) and watched the Geronimo concert at the old church at the bottom of Pelourhino square, had dinner and then wandered the streets listening to the drum groups – an enchanting introduction to a new culture. There were huge crowds on the streets, but also a lot of police, so we felt perfectly safe. The restaurants are good, especially for the Bahianese dishes like maqueca and bobo ($40-50 for two with a drink). The hotel also provides an airport pick-up and drop off service for R$85, about the going rate for metered taxis but cheaper than those available at the airport.

In summary, the Pousada da Mangueira is a well maintained hotel with a great manager and a perfect location for exploring the Pelourinho.

I stayed in the Pousada for 7 nights. I was due to stay 14 nights but I left early as I found the area to be very noisy. Some noise was great. Such as hearing samba drumming groups rehearse in the heart of Pelhourino. But my room overlooked a busy road with bars playing loud music, cars revving up the steep hill at all hours and people having loud conversations in the street at 3.00am. I did however have wifi as the room was above the reception. From what I saw the rooms in the more modern bit didn't have wifi. But there were two laptops in the reception available to all. Also on the subject of technology, the room had a basic tv with ariel but as expected all local channels.

On a positive the staff were very friendly and were open about the dangers of the area, issuing a map showing where and where not to go. Inside the Pousada itself felt very safe and the short walk to the main tourist area (down the road and up an alleyway) usually had police watching it. One photo shows the road down. There was also a small grocery shop at the square at the top of the road the Pousada was on and I went there every other day (daylight hours) and felt fine. On one evening though, about 9.15pm I heard someone run into the Pousada shouting "police, police" but I don't know what had happened.

After a while I did crave some quiet though (and sleep!) and booked into the Cocoon Lounge Hotel, in a very quiet area. However I didn't get a refund for the 7 nights I did not stay at the Pousada. I had pre-paid via a third party as I had been attending a course and was told by Claudio that a refund was not available, which surprised me as most places allow you to cancel a booking with 24 hours notice. Certainly something to bear in mind if booking this pousada, as with the single supplement I'd also paid, I ended paying a hefty price for a room I wasn't using and certainly would not go there again for that reason (as well as the noise). Shame it ended that way.

Location was excellent being central to old town centre and yet not so close that the vast amount of live music was annoying when in the room.
Claudio and George were excellent, really going out of their way to ensure you get the most of your trip to Salvador and the surrounding area - even when their is no profit in it for their Pousada. Our trip was very bad weather but they gave us reassurance of options and experience so that we made most out of really bad weather, including the onward trip.
Absolutely first class attentive and caring service.

Though it didn't affect us, it may not suitable for elderly people as the short walk into Pelourinho is very steep, and quite treacherous in rain re slipping on the uneven concrete. A taxi is easy but has to go a long way out and then back to get to/from the Poussada and cost of c20 Real.

Glauber, the manager, is super laid back, professional and helpful. Anderson, does a great job with the airport transfer and tour of the city (his price is below the competition and his professionalism is par with the best). The location of the guest house is basically on Pelourinho with a great view of many of churches and old colonial houses that make "Cidade Alta" a world renown place. Breakfast is great! The pool is clean and a tremendous plus for the hot afternoons of Salvador. Free internet throughout the guest house and free use of computers for those without their own laptops.

My stay there was really enjoyable as the pousada is fantastic: nice rooms and views, clean, good breakfast... On the top of that, the owner and the staff are extremely kind and helpful, which contributes to a very friendly and enjoyable atmosphere. I am very grateful for the support they offered to me!
