We came to Salvador not knowing much about the place. We found this pearl and I can totally recommend it to any other visitior! The atmosphere is friendly and very familiar, best for someone seeking a comfortable home! The location with it´s view of the sea is special in any case! The Villa also convinced with it´s high class standard!!! We would go there anytime again!!! By the way, it is also a great place to eat and enjoy the view from the terrace floor...

During my journey through South America I have been in a lot of different places, but there where only a view accommondations which should be mentioned of theire plessure and hospitality.
One of these special places is the pousada "Hotel Villa Santo Antonio", an old colonial house in the acient city of Salvador which was reformed with a good feeling of combination the old architecture with modern technique. Also the interior which is a mixture of these added with works of different national (Bel Borba: www.belborba.com) and international (Wolfgang Flatz: www.flatz.net) artists.
Five years ago, short time after the reformation of the building and opening to the "Pousada Hotel Villa Santo Antonio", I stayed already once at this place and was fascinated by entering the house, because you can look from the door through the whole building (over 70 feet), seeing the blue glittering ocean to the "BAIA TODOS OS SANTOS BAY" on the other side.
Now under the new german/brazilian management the hospitality is very familiar.
In the new restaurant and bar (also open to the public) wich offers a combination of italian and brazilian citchen you absolutly get the best meal in the hole area, sitting on the terrace overlooking down town and the old habour to the ocean (specialy nice at nigth).
Not one of the rooms are equal and with the furnishings of colonial and modern style they are very charming.
The nicest suites (more expensive) have this ocean-view, the master suite (only one) on the top floor with an whirlpool on the terrace you are overlooking the hole bay and the acient city, but also the others to the street (especial these with balcony or terrace) have great outlooks down the historial street, Santo Antonio, with all their beautifull houses which were build during the dutch and portuguese colonial occupation.
If you are visiting Salvador this place I would realy recomend also because it is situated close to the nearby habour from where you can make daytours by boat to one of the islands with their nice beaches in the "Holy Bay", the bigest is "Itaparica" or taking the catamaran to "Moro de Sao Paulo".

Having been already a guest four years ago when I was living in Sao Paulo I came back to Salvador. I spent a few days in the nice Villa Santo Antonio Hotel in Salvador because Camacari is always lacking a good quality pousada. Good news: the highlight is the restaurant ! Under the new management the restaurant is now open to the public and not for hotel guests only, and under the reign of Senhora Eliane , an Bahiana women who was a cook in the best Sao Paulo restaurants for years, the restaurant is now worth a star in the Brazilian ¨¨guide Michelin¨¨, the guia Quadro Rodas. Such a simple meal as Spaghetti bolognese I had tonight and which was just great (wonderful meat, spaghetti al dente comme il faut) reveal the high standards of Madame Eliane culinarian art. The day before yesterday the seule meuniere was a delight!
My room were very clean and the service was just wonderful, so felt at home in Auckland! .

1. Hotel lied about facilities -- no air con, no easy parking, no English-speaking staff -- actually, staff ONLY spoke Portuguese (among us, we spoke English, Spanish, French, German, and other languages, but nada from the hotel). The security guard also asked for a huge "tip" to watch our car overnight.

Note that language ability was important here: we didn't know exactly what was safe/unsafe in Salvador, or how to get places, particularly at night. Without any help from the hotel, we were stuck.

2. We slept poorly. Our room had a nice breeze, but we had to keep our windows open to the street noise (car stereos and motorcycles) all night long. Very unpleasant. Bad sleep.

3. Well-kept building, but way too expensive given the absence of honesty & any useful service.

Don't stay here. There are plenty of other good options at the same or lower prices.

Judging by the difficulty I had in my emails tying the Santo Antonio down to the price and category of room available for the dates we wanted, subsequently gave me the impression that they had been playing one prospective guest off against another to secure the highest amount possible. I eventually booked 8 nights in a ‘Super Luxury Suite’ with sea view during Carnival week and a few days after. The room (think guest house with minimal furniture and very high ceiling) finally worked out at more than a whopping £200 per night, and had I not paid 50% deposit by credit card up front I would have cancelled. First the good points: the hotel is in a nice position about 10 minutes walk from the old town and shops, cafes etc. The view from the restaurant and the sea view rooms above, over the docks and the sea beyond is ever-changing and interesting. The staff (almost all non-English speaking) are friendly enough. The public areas are nicely decorated, airy and reasonably clean. The air conditioning in the room worked well enough. However, for the price we paid one would expect something rather special. Instead we got threadbare towels, flat and exhausted pillows, a room and shower area that were never cleaned properly, a room safe and TV which wouldn’t work, and very loud music on the terrace below late into the night. The unhelpful front desk staff either could not, or chose not to understand English, and repeated complaints were simply ignored. Once the Carnival had finished and the guests thinned out, service became even more lax. The lady who appears to own Santo Antonio was then more interested in her boyfriend and her large dog which fouled the terrace than her guests. The staff took their cue from her and we were very pleased to leave. There are a number of other small hotels and pousadas along the same street and they appear to offer much better value.

If you want to listen to bar music until five in the morning (the bar is part of the "Hotel" and directly under your room), if you want to be cheated (and pay strange extra-taxes), than book here. If not you better change to one of the very nice Pousadas down the street, e.g. the pousada Bouqueiro.
