“Good for Salvador”
Reviewed March 29, 2012

As a bottom line the hotels in Bahia are very basic an d expecive in Salvador. Not wothing the money. This hotel/pousada is no diffrence but if you accept the fact that in Bahia the standards are way lower than in Europe you can live with it.
The breakfast is very good even it is not bufet.
The receptionist speks English which is very rare in Bahia and very helpful.
There is air-co in the room. Good location near Barra Light-tower. Restaurants in the neighborhood. Quite safe area. About an hour to the airport and 10 minutes to the old center by bus. The bus costs 3 RS pp do not throw away 80 Rs to the TAxi!

We stayed for 8 days in this small pousada. The staff was so helpful-all of them! Great ideas for side trips and helpful with reservations and airport transfers. Also, restaurant recommendations. Breakfast was generous and also available until noon. We have only good things to say about Estrela do Mar.

Room Tip: We were in room 3-a little noisy but nice windows.

Stayed here for 8 days, after Carnival. The pousada is located in Barra, two blocks away from the beach, with plenty of restaurants, bars and ATM´s nearby. If you want to do some shopping, Shopping Barra mall is 10 minutes walk away. The pousada is a beautifully renovated colonial house, with gated access. Sean, the owner, runs a friendly and helpful ship. Kika, Rodrigo & Robson take turns running the front desk and are always warm, helpful, and willing to help.

Breakfast is served daily from 8 to 12, and though it is not buffet-style, you will be happy with the fresh fruit plates and typical pastries prepared daily (I stayed for 8 nights and never had the same thing twice). Freshly squeezed OJ, eggs, choice of coffee, tea or hot chocolate, bread and fresh round up the menu.

Complimentary coffee and tea is served all day long at the breakfast patio, where you can also enjoy hammocks and couches. There´s a PC with Internet access (1.5 R x 15min), or you can choose wi-fi in your room for 5R/day. (more on that later).

I stayed in room #6, upstairs in the back. Room was spacious and sunny, with a small TV (no cable), minibar and excellent AC. The room can be a little noisy early in the morning since one of the windows faces the kitchen downstairs. Not extremely annoying, but if you are a light sleeper you might want to consider earplugs.

The only drawback the room has is that wi-fi coverage is very weak. There was only one spot close to the window where I could manage to get a good signal.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of room availability, I had to switch rooms for the last night, and I was assigned #1, a street-level room facing the front of the property, just behind the front desk and across the kitchen and stairs. This was a standard (not superior) room, but quite a low standard I´m afraid. AC didn’t work (it ran, but no cold air came out) and ceiling fan was so noisy you couldn´t fall asleep with it running. The small bathroom faired no better, with a wobbling toilet coming unbolted from the floor and some serious mildew stains. It was unfortunate that my otherwise excellent stay here was somewhat tarnished but this last night experience.

Unless you are on a tight budget, I would definitely recommend getting the superior room instead of the standard one. Price difference is not that big, and it will make a huge difference in the quality of your stay!

Room #1 experience aside, I recommend Estrela do Mar wholeheartedly.

Room Tip: Room #6 has iffy wi-fi coverage Go for the superior rooms Avoid room #1

First of all I would like to thank the reviewer for all the positive feedback. And for the negative feedback also. Unfortunately the criticism about the room he stayed in on his last night was accurate. Nobody had drawn any of the problems to our attention. He checked out 4 days ago and neither he nor the subsequent guests mentioned anything to us. On seeing this review this morning I checked everything he mentioned. The air-conditioner made all the right sounds but was not chilling the room sufficiently. The fan needed oiling and the toilet needed the loose screws tightened. I have subsequently replaced the air-conditioner and repaired the fan and toilet. I offer my apologies to the guest for leaving a sour taste on the last night of what he otherwise said was a very pleasant stay.

I, like most of the other reviewers, loved Pousada Estrela do Mar and give it the best possible marks for cleanliness, helpful staff and owner, great breakfasts and proximity to the beach. I have one little criticism though. I just don't understand why there is a charge for wifi. I stayed for 6 nights in January of this year and was charged for wifi - contrary to what another reviewer from November of last year says. It worked great in the first room I stayed in but it didn't even work in the second room I was in. Using it on the balcony in front of the room meant losing the benefit of privacy and air conditioning. As someone traveling alone for 4 months, access to the internet is important. One of the staff told me that everywhere charges for wifi in Brazil. This was the start of my travels in Brazil and now I can say quite definitely that I paid for wifi only in one other place - a very touristy big hotel in Foz do Iguacu. It just doesn't seem right in a cozy place like this. I'm in Argentina now and haven't yet been charged anywhere. Like I said, a tiny criticism. If you are going to Salvador and want to be near the beach, this is the place to be!

We stayed here for 4 days and were really impressed with the quality of accomodation and service provided by the staff . The location is on a leafy quiet street just a few minutes walk from the beach with some nice cafes and bars close by . The house itself is an old house with lots of carachter and beautiful wooden floors throughout . Our room was large ,quiet and comfortable with air conditioning. breakfast is served every day until 12:00 and each day is different , we especially liked the corn bread . The owner and staff were friendly and made us feel very welcome ,providing plenty of advice on what to see and do during our visit . This is a beautifull guest house ,nicely restored with very private rooms and an open and airy feel . I would have no hesitation in recomending it to anyone .

Room Tip: All of the rooms seem large and nicely decorated , we stayed at the back of the house however I thin...

Had a lovely stay in Estrela do Mar. Sean, the lovely, warm, Irish owner, couldn't have been more helpful to us - managing to sort out our onward journey by calling his friends and finding pousadas (it was peak season and no room at any Inns!).

The ambience of the hotel is charming and stylish. A lovely building bursting with character. Small and perfectly formed and a very short stroll to the beach. Breakfast was lovely too. I recommend anyone visiting this part of Salvador to book in!

Room Tip: I had a lovely room upstairs on the right with a balcony overlooking the street (not busy).

This is my second time staying at this pousada... The first was Aug 2007 and most recently Dec 2011... I wanted to convey to TA's readers that if you want a good location, fair rates, nice rooms, friendly staff, and tasty Complimentary Breakfast each morning of your stay...look no further.. Sean (proprietor) has got it down on how to run his pousada... I would recommend younger gay or straight couples rather than families... The hotel is small and not much room for annoying children at play ;/ . Bigger hotels with pools would be more appropriate for that.. Good Luck with your travel plans!

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice... No elevator so if you have trouble with steps request a lower level room..
