Pestana Convento do Carmo Bahia
Ranked #32 of 110 Hotels in Salvador

This hotel has a stunning location and as a former convent it has a beautiful ambiance. But o dear the service leaves much to be desired. Nothing like as good as it should be for such a luxury place. We told the desk we would like to dine in the hotel - they said that was fine as residents no need to book. When we later showed up in the restaurant we were told that it was not possible to accommodate us - so no dinner. We were too tired to wander the streets and after some discussion they offered instead a snack at the bar. It then took well over an hour to produce sandwiches and two simple hamburgers for our party of 5. The food itself was boring and certainly not what one would expect - although the price was steep. Similarly every time we ordered a drink it took simply ages. They seemed to be really short staffed and very unattentive for such somewhere that prides itself on being a 'small leading hotel of the world'.

I proposed to my fiancee here and it was the perfect place.

The ambiance is fantastic. How could it not be, with over 400 years of history in this converted former convent? They have done a perfect job with it, mixing modern touches in with the original wood beams, tiling and murals.

The staff were also wonderfully helpful, and very nice.

First impressions of this hotel were great, particularly after staying in the Pestana Bahia which is a poor choice. The Convento is considerably more expensive than virtually any other hotel in Salvador and is part of the 'Leading Hotels of the World' group. The place is a converted convent from the 16th century and has beautiful courtyards which look stunning at night. The pool converts to a fountain at night and the restaurant and bar are arranged around the yard. It is a very peaceful and pleasant place to stay and you could almost forget you are in the middle of the city.

The main let-downs are the food in the restaurant and the rooms which are very basic and spartan for this class of hotel, although they have most things you would need or expect. The food is hugely overpriced and the menu had the least appealing options of any place we visited in Salvador. Everything seemed to involve cod... which is ok, I don't mind cod, but not for every course! You'd do a lot better heading down to the marina and going to one of the many lovely restaurants situated there.

If you are interested in spas, the one in this hotel is particularly good. Expensive yes, but very good.

I would say that the area where the hotel is located is a run-down part of the old town and is not safe to wander round at night. You have to wait a long time for taxis too. My colleague was mugged at knifepoint a short walk from the hotel in broad daylight which is a common event here although of course it is no fault of the hotel itself.

Dear Customer,
Thank you for choosing the Pestana Convento do Carmo Hotel during your visit to Salvador.
We appreciate reading your comments, and could read between the lines that in general you enjoyed your short stay.
As you well know, the place is a converted convent from the 16th century, and is considered a historical patrimony of Bahia, therefore, it had to remain as it was originally built; this is why the rooms seem a little bit to small compared to general standard.
General comments about the food served in the restaurant are being forwarded to the competent department.
We feel sorry that one of your colleagues had a security problem in the area of Pelourinho; we can assure though, that the area is well attended by the State Government Police.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any further clarification.
Very Truly Yours,
The Management

A wonderful hotel that offers a level of tranquility that was unsurpassed on my 4 weeks travelling in south america. The hotel structure and quality offers an unbeatable ambiance - go stay and if you cant afford this then go for dinner or lunch or just a drink.

Elegant hotel situated in the old city Pelourinho in Salvador. This old convent has maintained the old style and combined it with luxury details. If you want to stay in a small luxury hotel with charm and good location this is your hotel. Please note that Pelourinho old city is cobbled stoned roads and for those who does not walk well surroundings may be troublesome.
