The Pestana group has done a very good job of converting what was a very large and imposing convent into a hotel full of character. Our one reservation is that experienced by a number of other contributors, the fact that the water in our room was never more than warm.

In Brazil one must accept the Brazilian concept of time, and by some standards service of an excellent dinner was slow. But we'd worked round this by enjoying ourselves at the entertaining bar after placing our order for a meal at the terrace opposite. (Bar snacks are also available).

The building is extremely impressive; I don't think I've ever experienced a more imposing chamber in which to locate Reception. Our room was large, with a high ceiling and wooden floor, looking into the courtyard where the swimming pool is located (with the bar on one side of it, the restaurant on the other). We had an excellent shower room. The corridors are imposing, with views from the windows and strategically placed sofas in a pleasant draft. The wifi worked well for us.

The restaurant opposite (Ristorant al Carmo) has a terrace with a superb view over the harbour.

It may have been because we walked round the city on a Sunday that the issue of security was less apparent to us than reported by other contributors.

We certainly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Salvador.

this is a very sofisticated hotel resembling the monasteries of iberic peninsula or the riads of morroco. It is ia real historical building (former claustrum) and offers a break from the busy and noisy outside pelourinho. Rooms and service are excellent according to the 5 stars level and culinary has a portughese accent and some modern inventiveness that makes food a plus. To people who can afford and wants to stay within the historical area this is a good option

Room Tip: avoid rooms to much close to the pool.

The convent has been sympathetically converted into an excellent hotel and it retains the calm atmosphere that one might imagine of it in former years. The room I had overnight was very comfortable (but would have been a little small for a longer stay, in particular because of the small wardrobe) and the bathroom was well-appointed and well-stocked with the usual products and accessories. The only niggles were that the lovely rain shower had insufficient water pressure with water that was barely hot enough and a hair dryer with a cable that was too short. Breakfast was varied, plentiful and good and the staff were friendly and efficient. The spa, which I think must be a concession, was good if a little basic but only cash payments were accepted (charging to the room was not possible and the card machine was out of order). The hotel is well-situated and within walking distance of the historic centre, the port and the Mercado Modelo (via the Elevador) as well as being close to several decent restaurants.

Room Tip: Ask about the size of the room before you book

We stayed here for 4 delightful nights. The room we had was not huge but an adequate size. It appears the room sizes varies connsiderably, the 1st room we saw was not big enough to accommodate 2 suitcases and had no easy chairs, so we asked for a bigger room. We have found the reception / bar / restaurant staff ever so helpful and obliging. Our room overlooks the pool and garden, a peaceful setting. What stops this hotel being luxurious is the water temperature is not hot enough and the "white" towels need replacing. Also the breakfast has been mediocre except for 1 morning when we were offered freshly cooked eggs. I would recommend a visit!

Great location in the old town. The renovation of the hotel in the ancient covent is a piece of art.
The hotel is very nice, and the rooms are huge. a standard room is enough for a family.
the round swimming pool is extremely nice.
good breakfast, service is average. we had a nice stay in Salvador

Room Tip: the rooms are huge so a standard room is enough for a family of four

This is a unique hotel based in a beautifully converted monastery on top of the hill adjacent to the historic Pelourinho area. The very friendly service at a Brazilian (as opposed to US) pace, coupled with the unique environment make for a rewarding stay. The breakfast (included in price) could be improved by transitioning to a buffet style to accelerate the event.
