Praia do Porto da Barra
Ranked #11 of 255 things to do in Salvador

Attraction details
Owner description: Porto da Barra is one of the few points of land in Brazil that face west over the Atlantic Ocean (due to its unique geography near the entrance to the Bay of All Saints). Because of this, Porto da Barra Sundown Show features sunsets which are both spectacularly beautiful and endearing because of the way people (visitors and local residents alike) applaud, cheer, whistle and sing while the sun sets over the sea. Porto da Barra Sundown Show also features various styles of live music at world-famous Hot Dougie's Rendezvous on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The water at Porto da Barra Beach is quite calm and perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, ad and other water sports. Even on days when other beaches in Salvador are empty, there is typically a good crowd at Porto da Barra Beach. Porto da Barra also features Portuguese forts (recently renovated as multimedia museums) dating back to the 17th century and number of good restaurants, bars, shops including used book and record stores, and a State of Bahia agency which promotes the production and sale of quality hand-made artisan products, and others.

“Enjoyable”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

We enjoyed staying at the Porto da Barra to watch the sunset. Unfortunatly, the night we were there, the lighthouse (farol) was closed so we couldn't enjoy that party of it, but I really liked it.

“Good atmosphere, but way too crowded”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

If you don't like crowded beaches, this one is not for you. Finding a spot is an Herculean Task, as well as maintaining it. Pollution and thives are also a problem. However, it's a trendy place, with samba circles playing, caipirinha and beer vendors and street performers of every type. At sunset, everyone applauds as the sun disappears in the Bay.

“I Absolutely Cannot Get Enough Of This Beach”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

Porto Barra is the most happening beach in Salvador in my opinion. It is always busy and fun. Whether is is the guys entertaining by playing the kavaki or the man with the biggest butt you have ever see sambaing in a bikini and being slathered in sun cream by his adoring fans you will definitely have a story to tell each and every time.

I love this beach because traders come here en masse to flog their goods. Suncream, kangas, earrings, hammocks, grilled cheese, caipirinhas, fresh prawns, cigarettes, ice lollies can all be bought on the beach and you don't have to move an inch. If your main aim is to relax this may not be the beach for you. The vendors aren't pushy but if you catch eyes they will definitely come over. If you do wanna get something make sure you haggle and you will be certain to get a bargain.

“Calm, clear waters with historic surroundings”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

The best and most charming town beach. In high season unfortunately a bit too crowded, go early in the morning or for the faboulous sunset
