Owner description: Sometimes called the "city within a city," this old part of Salvador is worth visiting for its cobblestone streets, pastel-colored buildings, churches, restaurants, shops and nightlife.

I was dying to go back to this place. A mixture of so many feelings, history, arts, religion, crafts. I wasn't disappointed! Well worth at least half a day of visit.

The mobile craft sellers have authorization badges.
A tip from our hotel: put a "Bonfim" ribbon on your wrist as soon as you lease the hotel - this will stop them from bothering you to sell something. it works.

Police supervision on every corner. Strange to see this but makes it safe.

We spent a good piece of our time in Salvador in Pelourino--it's great both during the day and at night. The colors are great during the day, and they frequently have street parties at night. There's also a bunch of capoeira schools, plenty of which are perfect for those with little to no capoeira experience. Besides all the numerous festivals, every Tuesday night they will have bloco-like drum groups roaming the streets with hordes of dancers following behind. We showed up after Carnival in Rio, and the party atmosphere was much more exciting to us here than in Rio. We were told beforehand by Brazilian friends that Rio was better than Salvador for couples going to Carnival, but after going to both I doubt it. YMMV.

That being said, you do have to stay safe, especially at night. Remember: this is pretty much tourist central, so if you stand out or do something stupid you will be targeted. Don't carry around too much cash or flash a big camera around. We also heard several cases of ATM card skimming, so stick to the official ATMs and take the money straight back to your hotel after you do.

Brazil can be a dangerous place if you're not careful, and Salvador seems to have more begging and petty crime than other places we visited. If you've been around and know what to expect though, you shouldn't have any major problems.

Pelourinho is must see while in Salvador. The place can be a little scary at night, but staying in the main streets is the way to visit this UNESCO site. Be safe, but you must visit Pelourinho

The old and colourful houses are really amazing! Lots of stores, restaurants and galleries. Avoid walking alone on the secondary streets,it might be dangerous.
