“Very interesting”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

Small but interesting to see. Brasil has a great maritime history and this little museum has also combined information related to the slave migration (appalling as the story is) to round out the historical context nicely.

“Sunset, beach, acaraje (street food)”
Reviewed December 6, 2012

I got there too late in the day to visit the museum. But I think the best part here is the lovely area, the beaches with high surf and the amazing sunset (tip - a large crowd gathers *behind* the lighthouse!). Walk the beach (be careful of the larger waves!). Grab some acaraje (street food) from the vendors (yes, it's safe to eat and it's delicious) and go watch the sunset. Get some acai gelato afterwards. It seemed pretty safe for solo wanderers too.

“Try to see this”
Reviewed November 14, 2012

The beach was lovely and the lighthouse had some great views from the top. It was easy to reach via bus from the old section of the city.

“Only lighthouse worth it”
Reviewed August 16, 2012

The museum nautico was quite disappointing compared tonthe counterpart in rio de janeiro. Drinks in the bar are horrible. The NICE thing about this place is the lighthouse and the tremendous view and sunset

“A vast improvement since my last visit.”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

I first visited the Nautical Musuem within the fort and lighthouse of Saint Anthony of Barra almost 10 years ago and was not very impressed. However I was much more impressed on my recent visit. There was a permanent exhibition on the Fort itself and the lighthouse, both of which were the first in the Americas, and there was the added exhibition on the Portuguese galleon, Santissimo Sacremento, which went down off the coast of salvador in 1668. Many of its contents that paint a picture of Salvador and its trading connections with Europe, Africa and Asia are on display.
There is also a changing temperory exhibition space by the entrance.
There is a small cafe and a sheltered spot that can be too hot in the afternoons.
