I would like to recommend Albergue Pedra da Sereia. We stayed 4 nights and we had a great time. The location for us was excellent, as the albergue is located close to the university, where we attended a conference. At the same time it is right between Barra and Rio Vermelho, and right on Ondina beach.

I especially liked the ambiance in the hotel, thanks to the very friendly help of Michael (the owner), Claudia and other lady's helping out. Rooms are clean, and the albergue is nicely decorated. And it has a beautiful big terrace, where you can relax in a hammack, work or study, with a beautiful view on the sea.

APdeS is a great place to stay in Salvador. It's right on the beach and the hammock strewn balcony is the BEST place to hang out...you can lose yourself for hours up there! There is WiFi and the owner Michael is a fountain of info, super helpful and friendly: check he is going to be around when you book as he really makes the place what it is. The breakfasts are good and all out on the fabulous balcony, its friendly: we went out some evenings with people we met over the breakfast orange juice.
It is right next to the beach which is great, you can also get the bus pretty easily up to Salvador town. You can walk down to the local square for drinks and street food in the evening. at first glance i have to confess we didn't think the location was that salubrious but it did really grow on us over the days were were there.
Our bedroom was the only slight disappointment in that it wasn't as beautifully decorated as the rest of the place. Would also have appreciated a lock on the window as there seemed no point in locking the door to our room given the window!
That said we loved our time there and could easily have stayed another few days just hanging out on the beach in the morning, the amazing balcony on the afternoon sunset and then out for drinks and food in the evening. Was super friendly, secure ( there is a security buzzer on the outside door, very good system) well run, clean and would concur with all the other great recommendations on Trip Advisor for this place. If you are going to Salvador then this is absolutely the best place to stay. It's like a posh hostel and great value. We would go again in a heartbeat.

p.s. also worth mentioning its on the main bus route so we got a bus to the airport when we left rather than a taxi. It was way cheaper, easy and door to door pretty much! Tell the driver you want to get off at Sukiyaki Japanese restaurant if you are doing it in reverse.

This is without a doubt the best hostel I have ever stayed in. I booked based on Trip Advisor reviews and they were all accurate. Michael, the owner, is amazing. He is an American who visited Salvador for 3 days, 26 years ago. haha. He knows everything there is to know about Salvador, even things to do outside Salvador. He is available every morning at breakfast and in the evenings for assistance. He mostly stops by twice a day just to make sure everyone is settling in ok. You absolutely cannot ask for a better host. His website was down when we booked, so I just gave him a call, and he couldnt have been nicer and more receptive.

My girlfriend and I booked for 3 days and stayed for 10. We became very comfortable there because it felt like home. There is someone on hand 24 hours a day who can help with anything. More importantly, they are people you can trust with your safety, which is not always the case in Brazil.

The hostel sits overlooking a local beach, which we found to be one of the nicest and most tranquil. The buses stop directly across the street almost every 5 minutes. They take you to the center in 20 minutes or less and are extremely easy to figure out. Although, within 10 minutes walk, there are plenty of bars and restaurants.

The huge advantage of staying here is that your in a neighborhood, off the beaten track. Most people get sucked into the center city and once there, you will never discover places like this. The rooms are fine, clean and comfortable. There is a balcony where you eat breakfast every day that is great. You can hear the ocean all day and all night. The rates are very reasonable too. We looked at hotels and they were so expensive.

He also has an airport transfer service which I highly reccomend. He will offer a much better rate than regular taxis.

Well I could probably write for days about this place, but that should do. I hope you go visit!

The hostel was the perfect place to stay during Carnaval! Didn't feel overcrowded, it has a really good group of people staying there, you get to know everyone since its small and has a very personal feel to it. The staff is very nice and very helpful, one of the women does laundry, and Michael is great, very knowledgeable about Salvador and always willing to help with whatever it may be. The view from the terrace is beautiful, and the proximity to the beach is just what you need! A great place to go and relax and take a nap in a hammock, plus the breakfast is great! The only downside is you can't use the kitchen, but there are plenty of great places to eat nearby.

We stayed here for 6 nights during carnival and loved it! Michael the owner made or stay- so helpful and friendly, and always around and offering advice and tips. The view is spectacular, nothing better then relaxing on the terrace in one of the hammocks after a BIG night at carnivale. Only about 500 meters walk to the end of the barra/ondina carnival circuit. And although the surrounding area can be a bit dodgy, we felt safe. Michael gave us great advice and also hired a security guard (who looked like usher) as extra assistance during carnivale. The room was a bit squishy for 6 and needs more storage space, shelves etc but we gave this feedback to Michael and he's looking into it. All in all, a great place to stay, worth it just to watch the sunset from the terrace. One of the girls staying here has also started a facebook page, so make sure you check it out as well.

If u want to avoid mass tourism & boring hotels that could be in any city in the world, this place could be just what u want. If u are more interested in getting to see what makes Brazil tick than in a luxury holiday, this hostel is right up ur street. However, if u want to peer out at Brazil from the comfort of ur EU/US style luxury accommodation, you should look elsewhere.
Pedra da Sereia has bags of charm and character, and offers an authentic baiano experience. The main double is fantastic, as is the huge terrace overlooking the stunning beach below. The breakfast is pretty standard pousasa fare, although that is not a criticism. The view us really what makes this place, along with Michael, the friendly US-born owner. He has been in Salvador for 20+ years, & offers some great tips. The only thing that may freak some people out is that the hostel is at the foot of what might best be described as a middle-class favela. However, fear not: this didn't cause any problems at all for me, and only added to the feeling of genuinly seeing Salvador from the inside. All in all, this place is great value - something increasingly hard to find in Brazil.
