Axego is upstairs (just look for the hanging sign and the stairway, just off Praça da Sé), and is a fairly big restaurant and bar. When we were there in December 2011, there were only six customers (two international tourist couples, and two locals just having a drink). It was all a bit quiet and sad, which is a pity, because the staff was helpful (not much English, but good humoured), the food was good (authentically Bahian... no suprises, lots of seafood, manioc and palm oil), the beer was cold. This was a good meal, and the place deserves more business.

We wanted to sample some authentic Bahian food and had heard about Axego before we tried it. It did not disappoint. The location on a quiet first floor looking over a garden with a cool breeze blowing through was was fine after the bustle of Salvador. The food was excellent, freshly cooked crab and prawn moceca in big portions, with lots of side dishes. The service was friendly and attentive and everthing seemed very clean and well run: the caiprinhas were well made and potent. The bill seemed very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food and the ambience

The restaurant is on the first floor. At the entrance just a small sign nothing more.

Salvador seems to be a mecca for overpriced restaurants. Axego, however, is very reasonably priced and turns out some really good food.

We ate there twice, both times were splendid. The food is of good quality, freshly cooked and tasty...not to mention incredibly filling (huge portions). Also, the service is first rate - unusual in Brazil! The restaurant itself is a very pleasant space to eat in, immaculately clean and tasteful.

Most of the main courses are for two people and could easily feed 3 or 4! They range between R$30 - R$45 (with a couple of the mixed fish dishes up at R$55ish).

In short, for around R$40 you get a really excellent dinner and a couple of drinks for two people. What more could you ask for:

This is mainly a fish restaurant with some non-fish items but not many. I agree with tothers that the location is not the easiest to find. I recommend getting a taxi to Terreiro de Jesus. Walk to the back right hand corner into a new plaza, to the back left otat hat plaz! You'll enter into a new plaza where it is on the fish side street. There is a wooden sign with the name in green hanging over the door. It is not a busy street and the restaurant is on the right based on those directions.

My girlfriend and I ordered a selection of starters, water and a caiprinha. The staff spoke some English and tried their best to explain what each items was to two people who were not familiar with the area and both relatively new to brazil. There was also a very large group sat on another table. We did not struggle at all to get their attention, they were always available if needed and checked to see if we needed anything.

We ate some croquettes, fried fish and crab starter. The food was a touch salty but not unpleasant. It arrived quickly and they expained to us again what each thing one.
The bill was roughly R70.

I recommend this restaurant if you are in Salvador. Also recommend the crab starter in particular.
