“A jungle in the city but needs a clean up”
Review of Mindu Park

Mindu Park
Ranked #34 of 159 things to do in Manaus
Attraction details
Reviewed June 29, 2014

We visited twice during a visit to Manaus. It is easily accessible by bus and is free to get in. Although the area around the river is full of debris there are lots of alligators and turtles around. We also saw a sloth and lots of monkeys plus some possum type creatures, a parrot, iguana and lots more. There are a series of small trails to follow that are quite easy to walk. There is one trail suitable for wheelchairs. If the river area was cleaned it would be amazing

This park is a travesty, and the people of Manaus should be ashamed of it. They are the custodians of a beautiful and important land that is the last refuge of the sanguinus bicolor, or pied tamarin. However, they are not looking after it. The river that flows through the park ad is inhabited by turtles, caiman, vultures, many other birds and the tamarin monkey, is so badly polluted with trash, that it is impossible that animals are not injured here on the trash. I saw Air con units in the water, plastic, paper, cloth, a television, etc etc. Disgusting. The tamarin monkey is supposed to be a mascot of the city, but pretty soon it will be extinct due to humans ruining its environment. The Mindu Park should not have the gall to speak about conservation when they leave the river in this state and threaten the animals in this way. The last money they spent was on the auditorium and convention center - money that would have been better spent on cleaning up the river and fixing the park signs and walkways. Two trails were closed because the bridges used to cross some waterways on the trails were rotted away. It is disturbing that the surrounding residents have so little education and care for their own environment that they decide to pollute the park that they paid for in the first place...The rest of us should be angry that the so-called custodians of this corner of our planet are destroying our chance of ever enjoying it again. Once these monkeys are gone, that is it. Gone for good.

I love this park, as it is actually a chunk of jungle in the middle of the city, with lots of wild/free animals: parrots, macaws, insects by the ton, and even monkeys are easily found, if patient and lucky. However, this lovely green space within Manaus suffers from frequent abandonment by the municipal authorities, so it will depend on your luck: if you visit it when they have given it some attention and care, or forgotten about its existence. Use insect repellant, take something to drink with you, and have your cameras at the ready: lots of opportunities, if you are lucky and quick! Do not stay in the park after about 16:30, as it starts getting dark, and do not stray around alone.

MINDU PARK is 15min from downtown and has 4 or 5 main pahts that provides you a walk in the jungle. You take one or two hours on each path. No noise from the city. You can see some animals and birds. If you are lucky, maybe you can see the Sauim de Coleira, a small Monkey that is the mascot of Manaus. On Sundays they have local breakfast with music or theater. I realize that more people from Manaus goes there more than tourists. However it is also a touristic place. good place for childrens
