The day we were there they had a SPCA like animal adoption outside the zoo and it was cute. Inside it was hard to take pictures as most animals were in cages, but I didn't find it depressing, just like an old zoo of your childhood. Then they had some moats where you saw the monkeys, crocs, and the jaugars. They had these telephone booths like macaws, and other animals , that in the day and age of cell phones was outdated, but the concept was humorous.

This zoo is run by the Military (who are next door), and it is called 'Centro De Instrucao De Guerra Na Selva' or CIGS. I was very disappointed by some of the small cages that the animals were in and their very poor conditions ie old litter within the cages, and dirty bathing waters for the animals. It gave the impression that they were not very well cared for and that no one had entered the cages for a very long time, other than to place food.
There were some signs on some of the cages, but these were poorly translated into english.
This zoo was a waste of time and money.
The owners of the zoo need to invest more into it if they wish to attract visitors and make a good impression.
I have been to other zoos in Brazil which are much better ie Goiania or Cuiaba.

Not a very good zoo as the animals are few and far between. Labels for wildlife are not very clear and it is not well taken care of.

CIGS Zoo (Zoológico do CIGS) is a traditional spot in Manaus. It is run by the Army´s Jungle Operations Center. It is cheap and one may find some nice animals from the Amazon, such as arara, onça, gata maracajá, jacaré, cobra e papagaio.
The Zoo is frequently visited by the locals, and regional fairs (Feira de Produtos Regionais) are made down there now and then. You may buy some fruits during these fairs .
The souvenir shops at the Zoo are excellent in both selection and price.
CIGS Zoo is close to the Ponta Negra Beach, not more than 10 minutes away by cab. A visit to this beach may be included in your programme.

Exciting djungle trip on the Amazon, provided by Amazing Tours Agency! We got to see lots of exotic animals and had great guided tours with canoes on the river.
