There is not a lot to see in Manaus but this is a must. The ceiling paintings in the main auditorium and the reception rooms are beautiful. Tours are conducted in multiple languages,

It goes without saying that you visit the Teatro Amazonas, the beautiful heart of Manaus. I'll be brief here- it's a beautiful opera house as other reviews and photos attest. I love the area at night for strolling around and relaxing in the square. A nice Portuguese tavern to the right of the theatre plays live music and serves cold beer. A perfect place to watch the setting sun.

I wished that the tour guide was a bit more fluent in English, as this is the icon of Amazonas- but still, your imagination drifts back to the 1890s when you see the beautiful architecture. I look forward to the upcoming Opera and Jazz festivals, where I can appreciate the acoustics in this beautiful landmark.

Amazingly well-preserved and remarkable to find in this remote city in the Amazon. We arrived early in the morning and were treated to a private tour by a lovely young lady with an extensive knowledge of the building and it's history. It was fun to wear the slippers they provide to protect the floors and which, with their furry bottoms serve to also shine the hardwood floors as you walk around. The theater iself is remarkable. Unfortunately, we were unable to enjoy a performance as our journey up the Negro River commenced in the morning.
