The Tropical Manaus is the flagship of the Varig Airlines chain. It is the most luxurious hotel in Manaus.

The hotel is huge. Walking from the reception area to a room -- in any of the hotel's three wings -- can take as much as five minutes. The rooms themselves are large, with comfortable beds, minibars and other convenienes, and good bathrooms.

The hotel has a good newsstand and several shops (including Amsterdam Sauer and H. Stern). It's also the jumping-off point for Amazon cruises -- most of which are on the mosquito-free Rio Negro -- and for trips to 'Amazon' lodges.

Two caveats:

1. The central air conditioning is unreliable. Twice the hotel moved me because the a/c in my room wasn't working properly. In Manaus, at any time of the year, a/c is a necessity.

2. I neglected to place some jewellery with semi-precious stones in my room safe; I left them in my shaving kit. Someone stole them. Realizing it was my fault, I didn't even complain to the management.

Room Tip: Por se tratar de um hotel na Amazônia,opção de árvores é o que não falta, ele é bem amplo e oportunidade não deve faltar para um bom quarto.
