We stayed here for one night pior to a cruise, with great trepidation based on some of the terrible reviews on this site. We are bird watchers and were attracted by the extensive grounds.
Overall, we were pleasantly surprised. Our room was large, immaculately clean and very well equipped apart from the safety deposit box, which looked as if it hadn't worked any time this century, or maybe last. We like grand old hotels and this fitted the description. It was a little run down but not seriously so and the grounds are magnificent, We avoided the zoo but saw lots of birds and some monkeys.
All the staff we encoutered were friendly and quite efficient and the food in the coffee shop was quite good (the restaurant was closed the night we were there). Breakfast buffet contained local dishes that were intresting and tasty. The coffee (this being Brazil) was excellent. For some odd reason you cannot buy a glass of wine; you have to buy a whole bottle.
It is a half hour cab ride into the city, but only about 15 minutes from the airport, Taxi service at the airport is excellent in a modern air conditioned car, and a fraction of what your cruise company will charge for a transfer, probably in a mini van with several other people. From the hotel to town or the ship is more of a hassle because the drivers are reluctant to take only two people. Standard fare for any distance seems to be 60 Reals (about $25) to anywhere.

Room Tip: If you have trouble walking, ask for a room close to the lobby because some rooms are a VERY long wa...

Here on a tour before getting on the Amazon. Room is large with great shower and bathroom. Beds are relatively hard, blankets seem like they have been around. Internet is $19 Brazilian a day which is not bad, wireless in the room. Service at lobby bar and pool area slow, but food in restaurant for dinner was fine -buffet was actually quite nice with salads, fish dishes and veggies. We are understanding of Brazil !

Dear Mr. golem67,

We thank you very much for your comments. It is very important for us to receive feedback from our clients so we can constantly improve our services.

The Tropical Manaus Ecoresort is considered touristic patrimony of the Amazonas State. Built in colonial style and inserted in the forest, it counts with rustic decoration made of Jacarandá wood. The hot and humid climate of the rainforest imposes special care, and our Hotel is in a process of gradual restauration of its installations. This process occurs in a slow speed so that our guests do not feel disturbed.

We hope to have the opportunity to have you as our guest again soon.

I already expected the worst (given the reviews here), but it was even worse. We only went because my wife thought it would be a good 5 star option to stay in Manaus. Be warned: the place is really run-down and has the atmosphere of a youth hostel. At check-in we had to wait 45 minutes before being served although there were only 4-5 people in the queue before us. It was 5 pm and the receptionist wasn't even in a position to tell us which of the various restaurants would be open right now. We were offered a twin bed room as supposedly all rooms with one large bed were already taken. We declined and insisted on the latter and surprise, surprise, we got it. We also insisted on a renovated room. The room was actually ok, the bathroom was, however, not renovated and the tiles and ceiling had stains, cracks and mold. Very ugly. Pool area is also very old; not inviting at all. Chairs and tables in the pool area are cheapest plastic models. The restaurants don't have any charm / flair. Reminded me of a youth hostel. The breakfast area reminded me of a food court in a train station. Taxi to the city center costs approx. BRL 70 one way. DO NOT GO HERE. If you need to stay overnight in Manaus, choose a new hotel in the city center but don't be fooled by this hotel. It is not a resort and does not deserve 4 or 5 stars. You have been warned!

Room Tip: Stay in another hotel

We had dreamed of our Amazon expedition for years, and the Hotel Tropical had always been included as a "must see/must stay", as it was ONCE part of the showpieces of the hospitality industry in the country.....I write in the PAST becuase the splendor is gone.....although it has the BEST location and grounds any hotel owner could only dream of, it is beyond repair....I started by stepping out of what I tought was the service elevator, only to be told that that WAS , indeed, the GUEST elevator..so I stepped back into it ..despicable conditions.....ONE elevator to serve an entire wing,we saw bellmen carrying the luggage on their shoulders up the stairs....! The LONG hallways are coverd with carpet, which in the Mamaus humidity and with the intense traffic (the hotel has now settled for intensive use, lower cost guests) smells of nothing else than URINE.....it is enough to make one lose his appetite on the way to dinner... The restaurant is dark, enclosed, and although the employees try hard, the product they sell is not up to standard....The rooms were worn out. Smelly and the pillows too hard (when asked for softer pillows, were told that that was all they had to offer). After our 5-day expedition in the jungle, we were back at the hotel for a final night, and this time we paid an upgrade and were given a "suite": the LAST 2 rooms in the farthest wing....500 steps (I counted!!) from the reception/restaurant/bar....barely something a modern day traveler will accept....let alone ageing tourists who make up a great part of the tourists having the means to explore the Amazon... The SUITE had a vase of flowers on the coffe table - flowers that HAD BEEN fresh a long time ago: no water and dry leaves and petals falling around the vase) - the electrical outlets were falling off the wall, the air conditioning units were unberably noisy, and the room smelled from not having been used for a LONG time!....The double mattress was smaller than the bed, exposing the bed boards both at the foot and the head of the bed....the sheets were TOO SHORT for the bed, and by morning we were sleeping in direct contact with the mattress (no matress protectors, either!!!) The toilet did not flush properly and the tile grout in the shower area was blackened....(grime, dirt:, mildew:::?) - the waste bin in the bathroom was very cheap and a nuisance to open...!The staff in the reception and along the hallways (the hotel seems to have a legion of employees standing og walkin gidly everywhere, but I asked myself what their jobs were???...) were poorly informed about their own hotel: I was told that the pool was cloed, no water....the area was being prepared for a big event....only to discover that the REAL pool area is in the back of the hotel...surrounded by beautiful gardens, with fish, giant turtlues, etc in the ponds...(the best part of the hotel is the outside!!!) - I could go on.....but what for? The tropical has been on a declining route since VARIG the Brazilian Airlines went bust.....it would have had a better fate, had a hotel group in the likes of Orient Expresss taken over....like they did with the Hotel das Cataratas in Iguacu....I tried to talk to a manager, but that was an impossible task to achieve: I do not have the explanation for the despicable situation the hotel is in, but the hotel is the ONLY one with such a superb lcoation, and the the impression I got was that perhaps the owners are trying to pocket their profits without investing, if they ever make money (very "cheap" conventions and meetings are held there daily, I could see...) - The issue is, Manaus is going to be one the hosts of the upcoming World SOccer Champinonship.....and what a chance the hotel has lost!!!...

Room Tip: Try to book a hammock in the back gardens, that is the best place in the hotel! ! ! !

The Point is there are not many Hotel alternatives in Manaus.
The Deluxe rooms do not offer good beds, actually it was the hardest (really inconvenient) I ever had in an expensive Hotel.
The architecture is not great.
Only the mini zoo is of some interest (in the court Yard)

Very nice hotel a bit dated but it had character. I wish we could have enjoyed at least the pool but we caught an early boat and headed down the river. Checking out took longer than expected
but the countries president had visited the night before and the staff seemed a bit preoccupied.

Room Tip: Use the bellman some of the rooms can be a bit of a walk
