It took about an hour for us to check in. We had a reservation from bookings.com which they couldn't find and the manager seemed upset when she had to help our attendant. The hotel was far from fully occupied so it didn't make sense why it took them so long to allocate another room as I was paying at the hotel.
They then gave us a room at the far end of the hotel which smelt like damp carpet. In fact the whole hotel smelt like damp carpet. We only had 1 towel and a TV which was from the 80's. The hotel was built in 1976 and seriously there doesn't hasn't been any investment in the hotel since then. The elevators were scarey dirty and had bad lighting. The walls had either mold or rust dripping on the doors.
We complained and then was allocated another room. A staff member came to let us in but didn't help with the luggage. The room was on a higher level and still smelt damp but by this time it was 1.30am. We gave up. When we got into bed we found the sheets didn't even cover the mattress. The mattress was foam and the bed frame was so old it creaked.
Everything bad you read here is true. The hotel isn't cheap as we paid 400 Real for a superior room and the rack rate is 800 Real for a standard room. I have paid less for the InterContinential in Sao Paulo. There is no excuse such a bad hotel in 2013 when other Amazon Hotels deliver a better hotel.
We only stayed here as I thought our transfer to our Amazon resort had to leave in the boat from the Tropical Hotel. Since a bridge has been built in Manaus the transfers are by van. There is no longer a reason to stay at this terrible hotel.

Room Tip: Just avoid at all cost. There are newer and better hotels for less in Manaus.

A wide spreaded, big place of only 3 floors, not higher as the surrounding trees. Very nice! You don't need to leave the place, everything is around. A well-kept swimming-pool with a well managed bar (no glass at the pool: VERY good!) We arrived without reservation, absolutely no problem to get a room and speaking portuguese one can bargain a little bit... Room and beds are big and well kept. The shower in the bathroom is good and functioning at any time (very important in this climate). The 4 (or 5?) stars are a little bit flaked off; but reasonable prices. Not always there are enough towels and it's not very clear, in which restaurant one can eat, it changes. You'll find it out, it's funny!

We stayed at the Tropical for 2 nights on the first leg of our journey as a group around South America. I was appalled at the poor service, old, dark rooms, cafeteria type restaurant and deplorable 3 passenger elevator this hotel actually had for us as compared to all it's claims. No one got the rooms we booked, we spent our first evening trying to get suitable rooms with working safes for everyone. We reserved deluxe rooms, I would hate to see the standard rooms. No assistance was given in any way and we even had to drag our own suitcases to our rooms, sometimes more than once. We felt like we were a problem to them rather than a paying guest. The general manager was always conveniently unavailable to assist us. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Demand a newer room.

We arrived late in the afternoon and left the next morning afternoon.. The hotel reception was efficient. The hotel was lovely, renovated and has large grounds, nearby to the river. We were on the pool level at the very last room of a hall. From our room we could see large turtles swimming about in the pool. It was a long walk from the lobby. The room itself was large with high ceilings and wood interior. The bathroom was large and efficient but there was some mold but this is the tropics! I wish we had more than one medium sized towel for each of us. The breakfast buffet was sufficient and a person was making tapicoa empadanas which were tasty. We had the buffet dinner and there was a good selection. There was no free wifi which is surprising. The grounds were nice and there was a rescue zoo.

Other than its former grandeur there is not much going for this so called 4 star hotel. There is no comparison to the 3 star hotel I recently stayed in at Sosua Dominican Republic. I honestly can't say one good thing about the hotel and would not recommend it to anyone. It needs to be shut down and refurbished and then ALL the services must be improved if they want to claim 4 star. Unfortunately I have to stay here one more night after my Amazon cruise.
