Tropical Manaus Ecoresort

Our 8-day riverboat trip came to an end about three in the afternoon and our flight home didn't leave until midnight. So we decided to get a hotel near the airport where we could hang out until it was time to leave for home. Our boat captain dropped us off at the Tropical, which has a dock right near it, and we got a room. We loved the Tropical and would stay there again next trip to Manaus. The room was lovely, the pool was gorgeous, the little zoo provided some unexpected entertainment, and dinner was fabulous. All the other hotels we could see in the area were high rises, which we don't like.

A little musty, dated, and faded, but in a quirky, charming way. Endless halls of dark wood, red carpets, and botanical prints. Feels a little removed from town, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you'd think the bar would stay open past 11, considering. It is easy to get lost, walking those halls, and employees aren't always receptive to questions. The wave pool is a nice. Yes, the zoo is a little bit dark and sad. Decent meals in the restaurant. Would stay again, I think.

An old run down hotel that reminded us of the movie The Shining" Lovely staff although they didn't understand English and one of the housemaid s stole our camera and sunglasses. We are currently seeking compensation. A sad Zoo full of beautiful animals living in abject misery in concrete cells. all in all a terrible experience which we would never want to repeat .

Room Tip: try to secure a newly furnished room our air con was below freezing and couldn't be changed

Hotel was adequate for a one-night stay (part of Brendan vacations Amazon add-on). Actually a beautiful resort from about 50 years ago. Only complaint is rooms need renovating. But lovely grounds. Very nice overall. Dinner buffet was excellent.

Imagine if you went camping and your sleeping bags got wet and you tossed them into a hot, stuffy shed for a couple of months and then took them out and slept in them. Imagine you left them in a shed for four months and then put them in a closet. The total EWWWWWW factor of mold and mildew and dampness was what greeted us at midnight upon our arrival. We were tired and in shock -- a little horrified. The room was like the two month mold and mildew scenario and the closet qualified for the four month one. So, I sandwiched myself between a wrap that I had backed and a jacket and put the hood over my face to try to cover up the smell and slept about two hours. The room actually made my husband sick (respiratory). We slept about three hours (if you can call tossing and turning sleep) and left. DON'T STAY HERE.

Tropical Manaus, just outside Manaus, Brazil February 2013

Pros:
• Sprawling area (several acres); building has only 3 floors and lots of room to roam, especially if you like to hike. [ next door is the Parkside Hotel, a typical high-rise with a more modern style. Boring. ]
• Mini zoo with rescued animals, some of which you will never see in the wild: jaguars, spider monkeys, parrots, . . .
• Large rooms; excellent breakfast buffet with a huge variety of food.
• Convenient dock area for Amazon river cruises
• Pleasant pool / waterfall / clean
• Helpful desk clerks give accurate directions, especially for independent tourists who do not travel in groups.
• Courtyard with many shops, some touristy and others for necessities
• 10 min. walk from bus stops, new beach area, and ice cream vendors; tasty fast food if hotel cuisine is not available
Cons:
• Somewhat monastic décor, dark wood, and a long walk to your room. Great exercise unless you’re in a hurry
• Older hotel that shows a bit of wear and tear, but clean
Most hotel guests arrive for a single night’s stay to catch a cruise or take a tour in or near Manaus. Our stay was for 3 nights after a 6 day river cruise via the Amazon Clipper Cruises company (highly recommended). Exploring the city on foot is far more enjoyable than a quick taxi run through town.

I cant compare this with other facilities in Manaus, since I have not visited any others, so the review is based on general travel experience rather. The hotel is convenient if you are transferring through and probably generates business through a good network of travel agents, so it may be worth while asking what the alternatives are.

The staff experience is generally friendly and efficient, which is a redeeming feature for a facility that is large and generally lacking in ambiance. It feels like a large time share facility, without all the little kids running around!

You may marvel at the polished wood details along the hall ways (too long and wide to be called passages!) as you make your way to your rather sparse room. I have never experienced a narrower bed with a thinner mattress (other than in a very dingy hotel near the station in Rome, which was booked over the internet before the advent of Tripadviser!). Also didn't have hot shower water on day of departure!

A nice pool area with very friendly staff, and caipirinhas are on par with any we had during our time in Brazil! Also, have the beef strips with friend onions and peppers... delicious!

Room Tip: try and avoid rooms that start with 25...!! it is very far from reception, and rather sparse!
