I cant compare this with other facilities in Manaus, since I have not visited any others, so the review is based on general travel experience rather. The hotel is convenient if you are transferring through and probably generates business through a good network of travel agents, so it may be worth while asking what the alternatives are.

The staff experience is generally friendly and efficient, which is a redeeming feature for a facility that is large and generally lacking in ambiance. It feels like a large time share facility, without all the little kids running around!

You may marvel at the polished wood details along the hall ways (too long and wide to be called passages!) as you make your way to your rather sparse room. I have never experienced a narrower bed with a thinner mattress (other than in a very dingy hotel near the station in Rome, which was booked over the internet before the advent of Tripadviser!). Also didn't have hot shower water on day of departure!

A nice pool area with very friendly staff, and caipirinhas are on par with any we had during our time in Brazil! Also, have the beef strips with friend onions and peppers... delicious!

Room Tip: try and avoid rooms that start with 25...!! it is very far from reception, and rather sparse!

Despite of the hot even in the winter nd in the summer ,we can go refresh ourself in some of the 3 swimming pool from the hotel, where there is some machine that make big waves .Beyond the swimming pools u can check the "mini zoo" where u find a lot of monkeys ,crocodile, tigers and more exotic and native animals. The breakfast it's fantastic, when I went there, during the check in they give us some kandy juice of courtesy ,was amazing.

Very convenient if you have booked a cruise on the Amazon/Rio Negro since most tours depart from the hotel's own pier. Big place with long alleys. We stayed there twice and had two different standard rooms - quite a difference. Quite dated but they are currently re-building. Nice Café in the atrium. Small zoo on the premises with local wildlife as well.

Before I start describing the hotel I must say that to the best of my knowledge The Tropical is only one of very few quality tourist hotels in the town. I suspect the reason for this is that most tourists transit through the city on the way to various jungle lodges or Amazon river venues. This was the same for us and our stay was only 2 nights.
Now to the description of the hotel.....
It is a fairly old fashioned low rise property with long, dark, dimly lit corridors. Although we were told that some rooms had been refurbished ours clearly had not. The TV was probably manufactured in the 1980's, the room furniture was tired and dark, the beds were hard and the room safe needed a sort of padlock. The main restaurant served a mainly buffet type dinner which seemed to sit there all evening (I suspect that explains some previous comments about food hygiene).
Now a few good points. the pool area was OK, the staff are friendly and the service was generally good and very efficient. The location is good, right on the river and about 20 minutes from the town centre.
If you go to Manaus as a tourist - I am not sure there is much better!

Since we took a tour of the city of Manaus before arriving at the hotel, we were thankful to see that it was secure and nice. The Tropical Hotel was the start to our Amazon adventure.

We loved the woodwork throughout the hotel and the history that was contained within, so we spent a large amount of time just walking the hallways. Definitely an older resort, but the room was clean and staff accomodating. We ate dinner, which my husband said was the best gnokes (sp?) he has ever eaten. Breakfast had a nice variety, and again the staff was nice and helpful.

If you like to venture, the grounds are extensive, with turtles and birds to watch, and it is a quick walk to the river and the beach. The pool area is large and inviting if you want to spend the day in the sun.
