I stayed in this hotel while en route to a fishing trip in the rain forest. The hotel is fairly old but but charming. The hotel lobby and bar are very well appointed. The rooms are outdated but the woodworking in the hotel is very interesting. If you are passing through, it will keep you dry and clean.
The hotel is absolutely gigantic. It can be a very long walk to your room (several hundred meters).
If you are there for more than a day and are looking to be comfortable, try somewhere else.

Room Tip: Check that the air conditioner works prior to accepting the room.

My partner and I stayed as part of a stop-off for a night on a Brazilian trip. When we arrived we were shown to a damp and dirty room with soaking wet stinky sheets, ominous stains on the linen and mould in the bathroom. yikes. the hotel itself was kinda creepy - lack of lights in the corridors and the art deco appearance. I think it would have been nicer back in the Al Capone days but it really wasn't fun when we had just come off a long flight and were really tired. Anyway, we made a fuss and were shown to a MUCH nicer room. the same thing happened when we returned from our Amazonian adventure (i.e. stop-off on the way back) - you had to make a fuss to get a clean room, which puts a downer on things. On the plus side, i enjoyed the soup for breakfast and we went to the beach restaurants nearby in the evening - everyone was really friendly. The hotel has lots of interesting facilities (zoo, shops, disco) and I really hope that they have had a chance to upgrade the rooms because it would look amazing. the building could be stunning.

We stayed here for 2 nights prior to a river cruise. It's a huge sprawling hotel. The room was clean and comfortable with plenty of room and the food in the hotel restaurants was excellent (if a bit expensive). The hotel has an old world feel; with elegant wooden floors, hallways & staircases.

There's a small animal park on site which is well kept. There is also a small shopping area for everything from spirits & cigars to postcards & sundries as well as clothing (premium prices of course). The grounds are well kept and there are walking trails where we saw quite a few birds. There is also a large pool area.

We found the front desk staff to be stiff, curt and not very accomodating. But, the rest of the hotel staff was friendly & efficient.

It seemed a bit expensive. But, the dock from which the river cruises leave is adjacent to the hotel so it's really the best hotel choice for beginning such a trip.

I've travelled to over 50 countries, but this is the only hotel in which I've stayed that had its own zoo. This is a huge place, overlooking the Rio Negro (the "smaller" brach of the Amazon) on the edge of the city of Manaus. It's a perfect base for exploring the Amazon region. I've stayed here twice and particularly recommend it to families. The rooms are good-sized and comfortable, although some are showing signs of wear. Food is good, but you get hit with a typical hotel markup. If visiting, it is important to remember that you are in Brazil, and service will be a litle different than in Europe or America. The staff are uniformly nice and genuinely friendly, but may not be as fast in responding to requests as might be ideal. It really helps to speak some Portuguese and remain patient. There is nowhere in the world like the Amazon, and the Tropical is the place to start your visit.

We would stay here again, the views of the river were spectacular. The local bus can take you to town in 20 minutes... bus stand is 500 feet from lobby.

Just a small trip away from the heart of the Amazon area. Lots of wood in this well constructed hotel. Well equipped rooms, although some of them very hard to reach for the elderly in our group. How big can a hotel get ? Still very good overall experience.

This hotel was booked by our travel agency for the first night of an Amazone trip package . Our impression is that it had already been a great hotel but some renovations are required. Rooms are clean but a little bit deprecated. Location is far of downtown so restaurents in hotel are the only option. However, it's directly on the side of the Amazon river so it's very nice to walk down on the beach.
