“WORST HOTEL EVER”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2014

Just stayed here for WorldCup- $300 a night, hair in the beds, sticky floor, cockroaches in the hall, guy with a megaphone outside our window, huge gap between ceiling/wall and the window… you can only imagine the bathroom. Considering I just did a budget trip to Thailand and stayed in hostels, I am pretty tolerant of accommodations. DO NOT stay here.

We were here in September 2013. Palace Hotel 5A is definitely a dive, not very clean, exposed wires hanging out of the wall, we actually got a jolt from the electric shower head. Bathroom is tiny, barely more than what you might find in a small camper on the back of a pickup truck. There is no safe in the room. Staff does not speak any english. The A/C in the room was barely functional but function it did. When you check in they give you a key on a rectangular key fob. The fob has a pocket on the wall just inside the room and triggers a switch that turns your electricity on. I'm sure the idea is to conserve energy when travelers are out of the room but the wary traveler will easily defeat this by simply removing the key from the fob so that you can leave the A/C on to cool the room while you're out. The door key did not fit the lock properly and had to be wiggled back and forth, up and down, in and out. I could have picked the lock quicker with a paperclip or a hairpin. Guessing it was not the correct key for the lock but, like the A/C, somewhat functional. We were warned that this area was not safe after dark but we were undaunted by the more "colorful" areas of Manaus and actually found it to be safe enough for our liking. Located next to a main bus terminal, lots of activity all hours, day and night. Very good location if you enjoy the street life particularly after dark but probably best to travel in pairs at least if not small groups. Lots to do and see only a short walk away. We didn't bother with the free breakfast as we found the street food in Manaus to be some of the best on the planet. Lots of bums but none seemed overly aggressive or dangerous.

I wouldn't say here again unless it was really, really cheap. Not a good deal for what we spent. Not very secure, don't leave anything of value in the room. Very noisy, bring ear plugs and/or sleep meds.

Hotel Palace is a great location if you want to walk out the front door of the hotel and be right in the middle of the city. The desk staff were friendly and helpful, although their English was limited. Our room was clean. The room was small and felt a bit cramped for 2 people, but that didn't matter much because we were there only to sleep and shower. The bed was great; we slept well. The shower and the A/C worked fine. The building and the room were functional but not pretty. Compared with other hotels where we stayed in Brazil, the breakfast was disappointing with little fruit. One morning the hotel was out of eggs. The restaurant staff didn't refill items on the breakfast table after other people ate earlier and a tray was empty. Hotel Palace was inexpensive. It was a great value for the price we paid. Glad we found it and stayed there when we wanted to be in the city center.

Awfull location!!! Dirty, smelly dangerous. Very noisy - difficult to sleep at night. Service quite OK. Food nice. Not worth its price for sure!!! There are many other nicest places in the town. It is better to book a hostel, rooms are rather old but pretty clean.

Don;t stay here, its oevrpriced and a dump. Manaus is general is a horrible city full of drunks... I'm not joking! Get out asap!

The hotel was old run down, dirty and in a horrible area. The aircon did not work properly nor did the shower. The paint was coming off the wall and the TV kept cutting out!

Dont waste your money on this hotel!

Nice place to stay if you want to be down-town. Some of the furniture is about to fall apart, the airco very noisy, and its not spotlessly clean, but it has character. The staff were very helpful and friendly, breakfast was good, and I enjoyed the French balcony with view of the park.

This is a fantastic low budget hotel in a great location near the port and the opera house.
In Colonial style most bedrooms have a nice veranda over- looking the PRAZA MATRIZ.
Comfortable throughout with good air conditioning, what made it so good is the staff were very, very friendly and helpful (although only a little little English spoken).
Only negative,no bed side lamps.Paid 72 Reais per night (cash) for 5 nights over Dec/Jan New Year 08/09
Also recommend basic Amazon tours booked through Cristavao (recommended by the receptionist). He speaks English and is very helpful.
