“Excellent Homemade food, Amazing view and organic meat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

From my 7 months trip in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, this place is one I will probably never forget. At the peak of Isla del Sol the view is just from another world.
We tried the pizzas, which were tasty , completely homemade and very good bread/thingsOnTop ratio. but my favourite was the steak. When you travel in Peru and Bolivia on a shoestring you realise that its really hard or maybe overbudget to get good meat. And when you've had endless mountains of rice and chicken, a soft, juicy organic steak cut nicely served with steamed vegetables and mash potato just at the right temperatures for, If I can remember well, about 30 Bolivianos is a miracle and a opportunity I couldn't ignore. twice

“If you go to only one restaurant in isla del sol...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

Las Velas seemed to be the only restaurant that stood out from all the touristy pizzeria´s. The owner, Pablo, was very friendly. The views are amazing and the food is great. And, everything (even the pasta) is homemade!

“Magical is right.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2012

After walking through a eucalyptus grove to emerge at this hidden gem, be prepared to have some of the best food in South America, in a tiny restaurant without electricity! The trout and lasagna were both perfect, and the wine selection is small but wonderful.

“something completely different”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012

This was a magical experience. Just finding it is a minor adventure. It has delicious, healthy food served by the person who cooked it in a beautiful place without the hassle of electricity or modern facilities! I was ill at the time we went so couldn't eat much but Pablo was brilliant, making me mint and lemon teas free of charge.

I can't imagine anything else in the area comes close to this place. Eat during sunset and take a torch to find your way back through the woods.

“Good food, rude chef”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012

After reading so many positive reviews, we decided to have dinner at Las Velas, and after about ten minutes of finding our way through the forest we stumbled upon the restaurant. We greeted the chef and wished 'buen provecho' to the other guests, after which we politely requested to have a look at the menu. Here's where the fun began!

The chef seemed insulted that we would request such a thing. In his not-so-humble opinion, we were being rude - we should just sit down and order something, asking to see the menu probably meant that we would walk away anyway. This was all explained to us in a loud voice, in front of the other seated guests. Mind you, there's no menu outside, all we saw was a sign that said 'Pizzeria Las Velas' and all we knew was that prices here were 'slightly higher than average'. Maybe it's me, but before I sit down and order something, I would like to be sure that I have enough money in my pocket to pay the bill at the end of the evening.

Anyhow, for some strange reason we didn't walk away gracefully. We actually sat down, took a look at the menu, saw a dish that matched our previously set maximum price of b.40 p/p and ordered it. It was oven baked trout, accompanied by a seperate plate of steamed vegetables and quinoa, and a basket of homebaked bread. It was really good. Unfortunately, the chef's annoying attitude didn't really change during the rest of the evening. Sure, he tried to make it up to us by proclaiming we were 'like family' to him, but in the process he kept trash-talking about the other restaurants on the island and tooting his own horn relentlessly. Other guests seemed to be quite impressed, we felt like he was just being a jerk.

Based on the food, Las Velas probably deserved about 4 to 5 stars, and the candle-lit atmosphere was nice too. It's just a shame that the chef's behaviour left such a bad taste in our mouth. I can imagine that it's annoying to have people walking into your restaurant, taking a look at the menu and then walk out again. But if you don't like it, for god's sake, put up a menu at the entrance outside. To save other people the hassle that we had to go through, here we go:

- oven baked trout: b.40
- the 3 other main dishes: b.50
- pizza: from b.40 (personal) to b.80/90 (familiar)

Enjoy!
