I went here for a very brief trip. I got the sea cat over from Corfu harbour for the morning. The sea cat only goes at 9 am and returns at 1 pm in April so only went to Butrinti for an hour. It was rainy and sunny but a good trek around. Plenty of old ruins but only small to get around. Some steep steps in parts. There are European pond terrapins in the ponds there too. it cost me 5.50 euro to get in. I went via taxi from the harbour where the driver Max took me here, the castle on the hill and Ksamil beach for 30 euros.

This is a review of the ruins of the ancient city of Butrint. It's in the "Butrinto National Park", but I'll review the park separately.

One of the best things about the site is the variety of remains you see there: theatre, basilica, castle, ancient Greek, Roman, early Christian, Venetian, all remarkably well preserved, showing the long development of Butrint over two thousand years. Another is how well the site is managed. There are a few sensible rules, for example, but not many, and there is a refreshing sense that this belongs to the people. No patronising, no infantilisation - on this much of western Europe could learn from Albania.

You can walk as much as you want, depending on how young you are, how hot is is (but there's plenty of shade), etc. People with mobility problems may not want to go up to the castle at the top. Paths are fairly OK. There's a map with suggested routes at the entrance, near the cafe/restaurant, car-park etc.

Very definitely worth going to, it's a highlight not just of a visit to Saranda, but of a visit to Albania.

Even the road there's interesting. You see the Corfu channel, for instance, scene of the famous 1946 Corfu Channel Incident.

Plays are sometimes put on in the ancient theatre. If you want to know if there's anything on, ask the Tourist Information Office or ask your hotel to ask for you.

This was my third time in Butrinti. This time, there were not many people and the weather was very pleasant. The new museum looks very nice with lots of good things to be seen.

Me and my wife took a day trip from Saranda to Butrinti, a 2000 years old city. It was wonderful, we really liked it..

My friend and I took the day trip from Corfu to Saranda on one of the boats. This was a package day trip which included a guide and lunch on the day trip. On arrival to Saranda our first destination was Butrinti, this is a a huge site where you are taken back in time almost 2000 years ago and there are ruins from different eras. Our guide was knowledge and gave us a lot of information regarding the ancient ruins here. It is worth a visit in Saranda. If visiting on a hot day carry a water bottle and a cap wear comfortable walking shoes and this place is so huge that it is going to take a couple of hours of walking and even climbing some steep stairways
