Owner description: Wisconsin’s oldest licensed winery… founded in 1967! The Schmiling brothers that grew up in von Stiehl Winery now own and operate it. The older brother, Aric, utilizes the most modern equipment known to winemaking as he artfully crafts fine wines. The younger brother, Brad, likes romance and history and manages the business. The Civil War-era building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features a tasting room, a 10,000 square foot production facility, three Civil war era underground limestone tunnels and a spacious outdoor terrace with Lake Michigan views. Von Stiehl’s 30+ grape and fruit wine recipes use top quality ingredients from local fruit (Door County cherries), as well as West Coast-grown grapes (Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon).

They offered a free tasting and the wine was very good. The storefront is beautifully decorated and the staff was very knowledgeable. It was worth the drive and we would definitely come back again.

This was our first stop at a winery in the Door Peninsula area, and we were not disappointed. The wines were good, the people were friendly, and the winery was very nice. The old building itself is actually pretty special too. All in all it's a worthwhile place to come for a wine tasting.

Taking a trip along the shoreline is always pretty, and a stop at Von Stiehl in Algoma should not be missed. If you like reds or whites, if you're an expert wine taster or newly discovering your palate, if you like dry or sweet -- Von Stiehl has wines that you will like. Their assortment is very broad, and their expert staff is very helpful in choosing wines that fit each person.

One way to determine fit, is trying on some wines in their tasting room. Never hurried and always feeling that I have their undivided attention, I get to choose the wines to taste and the Von Stiehl staff pours and describes each one. As we discover our preferences, the staff recommends some wines to try.

The winery has been here "forever", but is growing in size and number of wines. Quality, definitely, and as a merlot fan they are my favorite. Their Naughty Girl is deserving of the name, and Title Town is a great celebration sparkler. They have fun gifts, too, for wine lovers.

Was there when I was a child, still as nice as it was then. Bought two bottles of wine, they have a wonderful selection, and the associates are very nice and friendly!
