Owner description: Kusatsu is recognized along with Gero and Arima as one of Japan's three most famous hot spring resorts. The Yubatake (Hot Water field) is a central meeting and sightseeing spots in Kusatsu Onsen. This is the source water field for the bubbling Onsen water supplied throughout Kusatsu village. An abundant quality of hot water with a strong acidity of pH2.1, gives the water strong anti-bacterial powers with superior therapeutic and spiritual qualities, and has attracted many people for hundreds of years. The Yubatake (hot water field) is the symbol of Kusatsu Hot Spring. Located in the center of the spa resort, Yubatake is the source of hot springs that gush some 4,000 liters of hot water per minute amid clouds of rising steam. This so-called "hot water field" is surrounded by a promenade made of ceramic roof tiles and there is even a bench in the shape of Mt. Shirane, a nearby volcano. Here, visitors can stroll after taking a bath and relax while enjoying the unusual and very warming atmosphere of this unrivaled resort.

“Nice photo opportunity and the reason why Kusatsu is no.1 hot spring in Japan”
Reviewed June 15, 2014

This is one of the most interesting man-made structure that i have seen blended with the forces of nature. On arrival, you will smell a poignant sulfuric scent, something like half-boiled eggs.

The structure here presents for a good setting to take nice photos and there is also an area where you can soak your legs in the super hot water that comes right from the source.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. I bet you felt very warmed and comfortable with the foot onsen baths (ashiyu) around the Yubatake. We hope we can welcome you again to Kusatsu Onsen.

“interesting hot spring”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

The hot spring was amazing to see, and the foot bath was nice. Besides souvenir shopping, and a shrine, there's a show for 500 yen to see the traditional way to cool the hot spring water.

“An eye-opener”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Have never seen a hot water field before, so it's quite an eye-opener. The free hand-spa and foot-bath around the area are added bonus to this place.

“Great part of a Nagano/Gunma road trip”
Reviewed May 26, 2013

Great driving loop is to go to Karuizawa, Onioshidashi Volcano Park, Kusatsu Onsen, Shirane Mtn, Jigokundani Monkey Park, then back through Nagano City, Chikuma and Ueda back to Karuizawa
