This is one of the older and more charming accommodations in this spa town. The premises are well maintained, the room was comfortable (we chose the ground floor and therefore had little in the way of a view) and the meals excellent. The staff try very hard and, as is the style with ryokan, are ever-present (putting out your futon, packing it away, bringing your meals to your room, etc.) Kusatsu is a hilly town, so it is useful to have accommodation reasonably close to the bus station, but not right on the central square. This is a 5 minute taxi ride, or if you tell the hotel when you are arriving they will pick you up. Ryokans charge by the person and you pay for breakfast and dinner with the tariff, so the price may seem a little high. The meals, however, justify the tariff, in my opinion. The menu is set and Japanese of course. The onsen at the hotel is good, and you can have the bath to yourself for 40 minutes. It is not one of the best ones I have tried, but if you stay a couple of nights you can arrange to go elsewhere to explore what's available.
