“Perfect stay in Kusatsu...”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

This ryokan is clean and comfortable and only a short walk from the centre of Kusatsu. We arrived early and was greeted by the manager who provided us with maps and and directions to the best attraction sin Kusatsu. His English was very good so made for an easy conversation.
We arrived back at the ryokan at 5.30m and went to the outdoor onsen which was really great - an outdoor rockery one, and a indoor one as well. Only quite small but great setting.
The dinner course menu was fantastic - so much variety, so much food....This was an excellent meal. The room we were allocated was quite a nice corner room with a great view out to the mountains. The ryokan is well priced although a bit more expensive on the holiday weekend which is to be expected.

These guys run a really genuine, clean, tidy, authentic ryokan. They're very sweet and kind and the food was great. The rooms are simple but comfy and the bathrooms are great - there's a mix of private, indoor and outdoor public baths.

It feels a little out of the way when you first arrive but it's a very short walk into the town centre.

Would recommend a stay and the owner makes every effort to be accommodating.

I was in my first onsen trip and staying in Kiyoshigekan was a right decision :) We did the booking before coming to Japan and they send reply pretty quickly. Me and my friends stayed there for one night, but it was memorable. We were there in February and there were not too many guest. So we happen to feel like we own the ryokan and the onsen inside it. It's location is right for people who needs rests because its offer a calm ambience. Like the room too :)

I was staying at Kiyoshigekan with my husband for 2 nights before the Christmas last year. This place is cosy, comfortable and the price is reasonable too. We had been searching for Inns and hotels in Kusatsu area but most of them are rather expensive, especially those that come with private baths.

We love the private bath arrangement provided by this family run hotel. It's the first time we went Japan and it's our first time to try out the onsen too!! Therefore, we were not too comfortable to go to the public bath. That's also one of our reasons to choose this hotel because it has private bath for its guests. I read the review about this hotel from some other website and most of the guests gave very positive review, so in the end we booked this hotel for our 2 nights stay.

The breakfast was awesome and delicious! Breakfast's price was not included in the room's booking. The room was not very big but I would say it's very comfortable, clean and the view is not too bad! :) We stayed in the Japanese style room with tatami floor and it was an unforgettable experience for us! The owner was very friendly and helpful. We caught a bus from Tokyo to Kusatsu as we were on tight budget and would prefer to spend more on local food. The bus ride was comfortable. The hotel is about 10mins walk from the bus station and it's also about 10 to 15mins walk to the town centre.

Before we got to Kusatsu, we emailed the owner to ask for directions. The owner advised us to take a cab from the bus station. We checked on the map and it doesn't seem to be difficult to find so in the end we walked from the bus station to the hotel. We regret for not taking his advice as it was winter and the road got a bit frosty due to the cold weather. It was a bit difficult for us to walk especially when we had to carry our luggage with us! We spent about 30mins to reach the hotel by walking on the frosty road! If it's summer time, i would say it only takes about 10mins walk from the bus station!

It's a pleasant stay for both my husband and I and we would strongly recommend anyone who's interested in going Kusatsu to try out this place! The owner speaks a bit of English, so that shouldn't be any problem even if you can't speak Japanese at all.

Oh yes....before I forget.... the owner actually drove us to the bus station on the day we checked out. Probably it's because we carry big luggage and it's winter time, not easy to walk, so he offered to drive us there. We really thank him for the hospitality and excellent service throughout our 2 nights stay in Kiyoshigekan!

It is of no regrets that i chose kusatsu over hakone to make up part of my trip to Japan/Tokyo. Travelling to Kusatsu was really easy with the JR Express Bus and the direction given by the owner was straightforward though the walk could be a teeny weeny bit long with your lugguage - about 15min from the bus terminal. nevertheless, its easy to walk to the yubatake area as there are many signs (carved on the the roads) to lead you there from kiyoshikegan. owner knows conversational english and the staff were friendly there. he drove my partner and i to mount shirane to ski and even guide us with the booking of ski eqpt etc. place was clean albeit a lil worn but still, good stay. i was glad that there weren't any ensuite bathroom cause i wouldnt have experienced japanese public bath and true blue onsen culture! the water was simply miraculous and i swear my skin was silky soft and complexion got better after that 3 days there!! loved the baths, both outdoor and indoor, public and private - i've tried it all during my stay. breakfast was a lovely spread and having it in a breakfast hall was really lovely!! im really glad to stay here cause when i got to tokyo, i was so tired from all the travelling and shopping. this was a great part of my holiday and my stay at kiyoshekegan was really pleasant!
