We stayed at Hawks Nest Lodge for 2 nights while passing through West Virginia on our drive home from Florida and it was amazing!! We enjoyed the tram and the Jet boat and Rick the Boat driver was so much fun. We hiked various trails in the state park and used the pool at the lodge to cool down after all the hiking. The breakfast was just ok as not a lot of options but we found something to eat and left full. The rooms could use a bit of upgrading as they are a little dated but the view makes up for it.
The staff at the lodge and around the park were all so friendly and helpful, I wish I had gotten more names as they all deserved credit for being so great.
I am already planning to visit next year, maybe when the leaves are changing!

Room tip: Gorge/Canyon view is the best

Thank you for such a nice review. We are so glad you stopped by while passing through. The lodge itself is a mid-century design by the Architect’s Collaborative and is a Walter Gropius design, so it is meant to look a bit retro as part of celebrating its architecture. We do pride ourselves on the great hospitality of our staff but will work on the breakfast. Thanks for letting us know!

We spent one night at the lodge and it was a great experience. The room is adequate, the restaurant is good with a great view and the staff is very friendly. We got on the last cabe car trip down to the river and were super happy we made it!
After dinner we went for a walk around the lodge and saw lots of fireflies and deers.

Good location for rafting and other activities. The lodge is a little dated but adequate. We had two teenage grandsons and the room was very small. Not a lot of amenities. There is an outdoor pool. The restaurant is pretty good. If stairs are a problem, you can request a room with elevator access. I requested a gorge-view room and it was beautiful. There is a balcony with table and chairs. Racoons and a groundhog show up late afternoon in the yard below. Very relaxed, peaceful place and the staff were all super nice.

Room tip: If stairs are a problem, request a room accessible to the elevator. Also a gorge view room is worth a few extra dollars.

Thank you for your review. We’re pleased you stayed with us. We do pride ourselves in providing West Virginia products in our guest rooms including hand-made soap products, WV roasted coffee, and complementary WV bottled spring water. We have three gift shops, a full-service restaurant, miniature golf, a jet boat, nature center, miniature golf, an aerial tramway to the bottom of the gorge, an outdoor pool during the summer months and gorgeous overlook, and miles of hiking trails. We hope that you will come back again soon!

There was a lot of cool things at this WV state park, especially if you like nature and sightseeing. However, there was a mixup with the room. My grandma had a room reservation for a room with a couch, microwave and fridge and when we alerted the staff they got snippy with her. Maintenance carried the microwave and fridge down but my grandma was understandably upset because she felt like she didn’t get the room she paid for and there was bo apology or anything for the mixup. Other than that, the breakfast was great, the other staff were friendly and i got some great photo ops

We’re are so sorry about the mix-up, and about the snippiness of our desk clerk. We hang our hat on hospitality, but sometimes we just drop the ball on providing that great service. I hope you’ll accept our apologies for this mix-up and do hope you’ll come back again.

We loved the room, the balcony and the little tram ride. But most of all we loved the groundhogs, racoons and deer who came up under the balconies to be fed. Some even brought babies. I know this was probably not a good thing but it was obvious that these critters were part of the resort-had been delighting visitors for a while. WV State parks are a hidden gem and very affordable.

Thank you for your favorable review. We don’t claim these critters as employees, but there are many who call this property home and they do delight our guests and visitors with their frequent visits by the lodge. We do encourage our guests and visitors not feed the wildlife, however.
