Owner description: We pride ourselves as being one of the most experienced and dedicated whale-watching companies in Washington. Because of our very high success rate, Island Adventures was one of the first and only companies to guarantee whale sightings on every tour - but it's our team of highly qualified crew that will make your trip unforgettable! They boast over 100 years of combined experience in the islands, over 4100 days with the whales, and have led excursions for over 80,000 satisfied customers.

After looking at all the websites on whale watch tours, we booked Island Adventures for an afternoon trip from Anacortes, WA. What a great decision that turned out to be! Before the trip I called and asked them a few questions about what to expect and they seemed very knowledgeable and were very pleasant to deal with. I booked the afternoon trip via the internet on the larger boat for the family. We have a 9 yr old and a 13 yr old so I really hoped we would see at least some whale action. We stayed in Seattle the night before took a leisurely drive to get to Anacortes for the afternoon trip. Check in is at their HQ and you then drive about a mile to the dock for boarding. The larger boat for us was the best way to go. It was roomy, plenty of seating, stable, a large indoor area to get away from the rain and cold (although we were in clear skies fro our trip) and a nice little lunch counter that serves hot dogs, chips, drinks, etc. Bring a sack lunch if you would rather have something else. We left the dock and headed for an area that was active with feeding whale pods earlier that day. About an hour into our 4 hr ride, we started seeing groups of whales breaching and feeding. This went on for nearly the entire ride. They have a guide on board to point out whales and she knew many of them by name. My kids loved it and even my wife, who is not really an outdoor person, wanted to go again in the future. It was well worth the time and money for us.

We took the noon tour this past week. The crew was friendly and informative. The boat was clean and comfortable. We were out for a little over 6 hours. The crew is in contact with other boats and found out where the whales were. They were a good ways north of where we started out, so we headed that way. The weather was beautiful. Both the crew and the captain pointed out landmarks and wildlife along the way. We didn't get much time with the whales because of the distance, but we did get to see some good activity.
I agree with previous reviewer about children. There were people on the trip that made we wonder why they were willing to pay so much just to sit inside the cabin and fuss with babes in arms instead of appreciating the scenery, but that is their business.
We made reservations several weeks early and check-in was simple. If you are from a different weather region, you can purchase a pretty warm jacket for a reasonable amount at the store.
Read the little booklet you get when you check in. It is very informative and whoever wrote it had a clever sense of humor in some places.

We just did this yesterday and it was a disappointment. It may not be the fault of the Island Adventure group because they can't schedule wildlife for our convenience. But just be aware. When they say you'll see whales, it might not be the spouting Orca they portray on their brochure.
We were introduced to Minke Whales and it was pretty cool, but you just get a glimpse of them as they come to the surface and then head back down. We hung around the Minke Whales for about thirty minutes.
The trip was five hours long and most of that was pretty boring although the scenary is beautiful For people with young kids, I don't recommend it. Most of the time parents were chasing their kids around the boat because they were bored also.
It was a gorgeous day with very little wind and as the Captain said, "It's a perfect day."
The experience with the crew of the vessel was just okay. They didn't entertain much and just pointed out the appropriate wildlife and islands and such. I don't want to beat up on them because like I said, they couldn't position wildlife and can't always know where to locate whales in a huge area.

So my recommendation is that if you have plenty of time to take a 5 hour ride go ahead. We paid $60 for the early morning trip and it was gorgeous. It's just that after 5 hours of gorgeous, I was wondering what else I could have been doing with my day. I posted some pictures below.
