We often enjoyed the terrific macadamia nut crusted halibut at the "old Randy's" and wondered over the years, why Anacortes' best active view restaurant didn't spruce up the interior to compete with other new downtown restaurants (with no water view). We heard a new owner had remodeled the restaurant and stopped in during Happy Hour for a drink on the sunny deck a few weeks ago. We noticed the new neat and trim new look in the downstairs restaurant, and construction on an outside-glass wind barrier. The waiter said it would be ready soon. Weeks later, we made reservations for dinner n the downstairs restaurant on a Saturday night. But somehow our name never made it into the book. The hostess said no problem and right away showed us to a table. We enjoyed watching the boat traffic on the Channel and the peaceful Guemes Island view. The restaurant was half full with mostly seniors, probably like us, checking it out. The menu is new, and the prices for both drinks and food seem a shade cheaper than other downtown restaurants. We ordered the dinner specials of Prime Rib and a Macadamia Nut Crusted Halibut. The portions were not huge which pleased both of us. My companion had no complaints about his beef, but I remember the "old Randy's" Macadamia Nut Crusted Halibut and was disappointed. No evidence of nuts in the crust plus my veggies were overcooked. Maybe the regular chef had the night off. My dinner was just O.K. We decided we'll go back and retry the food when the patio construction is finished, and I'll order something different from the menu.
