Majestic Inn and Spa
Ranked #1 of 10 Hotels in Anacortes
Certificate of Excellence

Although I had made my two-night reservation (Saturday and Sunday) over three months in advance of my stay - and confirmed my booking one week prior - I was advised when my wife and I arrived at the hotel at 4:00 pm on Saturday afternoon that the hotel was overbooked for Saturday night. I was told that we would be moved to an inferior motel for Saturday night and would then have to move back to the Majestic Inn for Sunday. This certainly was a rude awakening, especially since it was raining quite heavily when we arrived and we were unable to locate a parking space anywhere near the hotel, thus we had trudged through the rain just to reach the hotel.

Upon protesting the hotel's intention to move us to another property for one night, I was advised that there was a large wedding in the hotel (this was obvious since the wedding guests took up the entire hotel parking lot) and our room had been given to late-booking wedding guests.

While I was able to negotiate a more suitable relocation arrangement which did not require moving from hotel to hotel, I would certainly recommend that travelers be cautious if considering this hotel as the management seems to have no concern with "bumping" guests in favor of other later booking clients who may happen to belong to a large group.

The Majestic Inn is exactly what you'd expect in cutesy downtown Anacortes. We booked the cheapest room ($129), and while it was not big, it had inner bigness because of the tall ceilings. The bed was luxurious and the whole room nice and airy (it was ~80*) with numerous opening windows...complete with shutters! The only thing we lacked in the room was a fridge, and the ice bucket was too small to hold a chilled bottle of wine.

Breakfast was the typical continental fare (granola, hard boiled eggs, pastries, bad fruit, yogurt) and the restaurant menu looked good though pricey (didn't try it). I'd recommend the Brown Lantern (across the street) for a drink and bite.

The biggest issue was outside the hotel. The City of Anacortes started sweeping the street well before 5 a.m., and they proceeded to go by our window at least 8 times. Compound this with the workers installing a metal awning across the street, also before 5 a.m. through to when we checked out, and we sure did not sleep in.

The hotel handled the situation well, though. They gave us a 25% discount and an apology. If the city and local workers would have kept quiet until at least 8 a.m., I would have given the hotel five stars.

Hate to give such a weak rating because the room really was lovely and there is nothing else as upscale in Anacortes, but we could barely sleep with the noise from our neighbor's room. He fell asleep with the tv on and not even his alarm clock woke him up. Unfortunately we could hear both loud and clear!

The location is great, and the room (top floor, with a small balcony) was beautiful and quirky (in a good way). The only problems were a) the elevator only goes to the 4th floor, so we carried our luggage up one flight of stairs; there was the noise from the nearby restaurants at night, including motorcycles, drunken yelling, and so on, until after 1am on a friday night. Not too bad with windows closed, but my wife decided to wear ear plugs.

Our (possibly upgraded) room had a DVD and CD player, plus fridge and great tub, which was perfect for us.

The Majestic was truly a gem - a wonderful experience. We wanted a quiet two-night getaway close to Seattle and this was perfect. Spacious Queen-room, friendly & helpful staff, excellent restaurant, interesting historic town built for walking about, especially to view the unique murals. Can't wait to go back!
