The view from Mt. Erie is the best on Fidalgo Island. There are three fantastic view areas. At the top, the Whidbey Island view goes from the base of Mt Erie, to all the lakes and bays, down Whidbey and out into Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mts. The other viewpoint at the top looks toward Mt. Baker and everything in between, such as Anacortes, Padilla Bay and the Skagit Valley. The best sunset view of the San Juan Islands is up here at the pull out before the top that faces west. there is only enough space for a couple of cars at this pull out, but I think this is the best sunset view on the island.

If you don't have time for an all day experience in one of the beautiful forests in Washington, make the drive to the top of Mount Erie. The switchback road to the top of the mountain winds through a dense forest and ground green with thousands of ferns. The same fern I cannot keep alive in my own home. Keep your eyes open for wild life. We have never failed to see deer on this short drive.

A drive through the forest is rewarded by spectacular views at the top of the mountain. Well maintained trails lead visitors to several overlooks where you can absorb the scenery from Mount Baker to Mount Rainier to the spectacular San Juan Islands. We were standing quietly at a small overlook when an eagle flew past us, right at eye level and close enough to touch. We then watched him ride the air currents for several long minutes before he moved off.

There are no picnic tables, and really not even any place to sit except the natural rocks and the man-made retaining walls. The only tourist accommodation is a porta-potty. This does not prevent us from tossing a couple of folding out-door chairs in the trunk along with a picnic basket and enjoying a quiet lunch in this picturesque spot.

This is probably one of the best 30 minute side trips you can take. The view is a huge pay-off for the brief investment of time. It is someplace we go frequently, especially to observe the seasonal changes.

Nice drive up and a great view once you arrive. Pretty steep getting up there. Might be a bit steep to ride on a bike.

If you want a breathtaking view, make the drive up to the top of Mt. Erie! There are trails, handrails, and viewing points all around the top. There is a stillness that calms as you take in the magnificent views. Definitely worth the drive.

This is definitely the best place to go if you want great views of the Pacific Northwest landscape. You can either hike up one of the trails from the bottom or drive right to the top. On a clear day you Mount Baker, Three Fingers, Whitehorse and Mount Rainier are all visible, in addition to the beautiful San Juan Islands. I highly recommend this hike also.
