Second stay here in the past 3 years. Room was clean...bed was a bit hard though. Innkeeper was a not too friendly...and breakfast was just usual continental style. If you like trains this is a great place to stay!

As a former semi regular customer, I have seen this inn consistently lose its charm over the last several years. After a recent stay, I felt it best to describe what I had been feeling for a while. Most importantly, the room was not terribly clean, old and musty, the air vents contained mold and also came with ants (many of them at no charge) and did not provide any of the amenities one would find at the turn of the last century. Rotted wood, peeling paint was common to the rooms we occupied. No refrigeration unit of any kind in the room, dirty, collected items like paper and food behind the bed and cabinet, no hangers or ironing board/iron and of course, no one to speak to since everyone on staff is generally gone by 5PM. After a five day stay, towels were never replaced, linens never changed, bathroom not cleaned and no other rooms available (per the front desk). This visit we chose not to dine in for breakfast (which was probably a good choice). Room charges were also higher and the cancellation policy was for 30 days in this case. Really, not worth the money.
It is really unfortunate, since the location is convenient. With some serious clean up and a staff providing better service to guests, this inn could restore some of its previous charm and dignity.

This is the second time I have stayed at this quaint inn. It is in the center of Ashland, easy to find off of Rte. 1 and Interstate 95. This place is so charming. It is a two-storied house with a large porch surrounding it with lots of rocking chairs for hours of reading and relaxing. The inside is decorated with antiques and is interesting and attractive. There are comfy living spaces to share lined with filled book shelves. I loved waking in the morning to the sounds of birds and crickets and then sitting on the porch as the new day arrived. It's a beautiful place to stay.

Even though I had been a loyal customer, the Henry Clay Inn insisted on charging me for a room even though I cancelled. Too bad because the train community loves their location. Maybe they will get new, reasonable management. They put little effort in the breakfast they serve. I would stay away from this property.

This place did not live up to the B&B's that we have stayed in before. There is no innkeeper to greet you upon arrival to make you feel welcome. The inn has not been updated since the 80's. The inn also needs a lot of maintenance and repair. The paint is molded in areas and peeling. You can see rotted wood that needs replacing on the porches. The room size was adequate but the shower head is metal and old. The shower curtain rod is metal and rusted. The bathroom shower curtain has mold on the bottom of it. The bed's mattress is old, hard and very uncomfortable. The bed linens are old and of the lowest thread count/quality. I was really displeased with the bed. The breakfast is not "Hot and Homemade" like advertised on the website. It is a substandard version of a continental breakfast consisting of juice, coffee, thin bagels, cold muffins, limited cereal boxes. Breakfast is served from 8am-10am. They have part-time help that works the desk but only during certain hours of the day. If you need ice for you ice bucket, you have to go the front desk and hope they are available to give it to you. I only wish I had read the prior reviews on this inn and booked at a chain hotel instead. At least you know you're getting a comfortable bed and a nice continental breakfast for a better value.

Room Tip: Book elsewhere if you are looking for comfort.

Some collegues and I stayed at the Henry Clay Inn on a recent business trip. This hotel is billed as a quaint, older inn and that is exactly what it was. My room was very clean and adequate for what I needed. I had no problems the entire stay. The inn seems old, even older than it actually is, but that is part of its personality. The staff was very freindly, but they are not there all of the time, which I think makes it seem even more intimate. The breakfast starts at 8:00 AM so business travelers will not likely be able to eat it. We did stick around one morning for the breakfast, which consisted of cereal, muffins, bagels, fruit, juices, and coffee.
My room was on the back side so, although I heard the trains, it did not keep me up. I was told there are 30 to 40 trains a day on that track, but, again, it is part of the charm of the town and the inn.
If you are looking for a grand hotel with lots of frills and amenities, this is not it. However, for a quaint, clean, charming hotel, the Henry Clay does alright.

BEDS TOO SHORT. THE STAFF OVERSLEPT UNTIL 10AM SO NO BREAKFAST. Only staffed during biz hours so if you arrive late (past 5pm), you must pre-arrange to have the key made available with details instructions for the treasure hunt to find it. They offered a $10 coupon for our next vist which won't happen.

WiFi WAS NOT AVAILABLE

The delay of the staff caused us to miss crucial meetings in order to wait to arrange storage of our bags. We had to do this because as stated before, ALL OF THE STAFF LEAVE AFTER BUSINESS HOURS.
