Our Finnish cousins were visiting America and we wanted to take them to an American restaurant in the Center of the Universe. Trackside Grill ‘filled the bill’ as it is located in Historic Ashland right alongside the railroad tracks. The theme throughout the restaurant is of thoroughbred horses. It has an open, airy, breezy and family friendly atmosphere. The expansive menu consists of starters, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, entrees, and steamer items – generous portions are served for the money – gracious hostess - excellent wait staff and service. We were a party of nine and we dined on Caesar Salad, Steak Salad, Cobb Salad, Chopped Oriental Chicken Salad, Burger, Half Rack of BBQ Ribs, Salmon, Chicken Santa Fe, Mediterranean Pasta, and adult beverages. Each of our entrees were ‘done to perfection’ and delectable. If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, Trackside is the place to try. We definitely will be repeat customers!

Trackside Grill is on the centerpiece street of the town that calls itself the Center of the Universe. The place is fairly large and well-kept. We went during the off-time, late afternoon, between lunch & dinner. We were seated promptly, and our server was friendly & attentive.
We ordered two appetizers, steamed shrimp & their plain nachos. The shrimp was cooked to the correct point of tenderness, and the nachos were served with salsa, sour cream, and guacamole on the side so they didn't get soggy. So far, so good. there were just two of us and we were prepared to settle in for a nice chat over a leisurely meal.
After a couple of bites of our appetizers, here comes the main fare! Suddenly our table looked like a groaning board, and we found ourselves trying to wolf down the food so it wouldn't get cold, alternating between appetizer and burger & crabcake sandwich, respectively. Perhaps it was the poor timing, but the sandwiches didn't live up to the promise made by the steamed shrimp. Not at all bad, but not exceptional.
I'd go back to take another whack at it, because we were there during an off-hour. The dinner menu options were not yet available, but several of them sounded good.

On a recent visit we found both the food and service to be above average. Our table enjoyed the barbecue sandwich, the reuben, the club, and the crabcake sandwich. The sides were good as
well and quite plentiful. Everyone seemed especially to enjoy the sweet potato fries. The only
complaint was that the cole slaw that was ordered with the crabcake sandwich should have been
in a bowl. The juice from the slaw ran through the plate and soaked the bottom of the sandwich.
Other than that, everyone seemed pleased with the taste of the food and the friendly service. We'll definitely go back.

Was the first visit for my wife and I. We went with another couple who live in Ashland, and who have eaten there on multiple occasions and recommended it.

They have a parking lot on the rightside of the restaurant, so no need to look for on-street parking. Having spent time in the UK, we found the restaurant to be very pub-like in it's atmosphere. We saw a number of families there with children, and saw a group of single guys back at the small bar in the rear of the restaurant. The booths with high backs offered some privacy and intimacy on a crowded Saturday night. We assumed that the name "Trackside" came from being located next to the CSX/Amtrak tracks in front of the restaurant, but learned that the name came from the owners' love of horses and spending their leisure time at horse tracks.

We found the service to be casual and very friendly. Our waitress was very down to earth and we were joking around with her within 10 minutes. If you prefer stuffy, pretentious wait staff, then this is not your place. They wait staff were very much in character for a pub like restaurant. Our drink orders were taken quickly and our dinner order was taken in an appropriate amount of time.

I had the Gorgonzola Chicken Bowtie pasta dish and thoroughly enjoyed it. The pasta was fresh and light, the chicken was plentiful, the white sauce was very tasty and the bacon bits added a nice flavor touch to the dish. I would order this again.

My wife was not impressed with the crab cakes. Being raised in the Baltimore, MD area, she is a crab cake connoisseur, having eaten them for most of her life. Her Richmond standard for crab cakes was set by Jimmy Sneed in his Frog & Redneck restaurant. These did not measure up, according to her. The "lumps" advertised in the menu were shredded crab, the breading on them was too much and and been cooked to long. She said that she would order something else next time.

One of our friends ordered the Salmon entree and said that he really enjoyed it. Our other companion ordered soup and salad, so what can you say about that?

My one and only criticism of the service is that we had to ask for a refill of our ice tea. This is inexcusable because wait staff can clearly see that your glass is near empty and should offer a refill without being asked for it. If our waitress had been a tad more attentive while walking by our table, this would have never been an issue.

We found the prices reasonable.

Bottom line - we would go back in the future without hesitation.

Very good food. Friendly service. Lots of horse racing prints and some train prints on the walls. Ate there with non-profit rail group on Nov.17, 2012.
