This is a nice neighborhood restaurant that just opened on Lee Highway. You can eat in or take out. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy, but the food is very good. It has just the right amount of spicing and heat. The flavors are very subtle, and the heat sort of sneaks up on you. You get a TON of food for the price. I usually get two meals out of one. I had the chicken kabobs which came with a really nice brown rice pilaf, cooked pumpkin with yoghurt, very good chickpeas and bread. Everything was very tasty. My husband had the lamb which he said was very well marinated and cooked just as he likes it. If you're looking for a very informal meal with good food, this is the place.

The Kite Runner Cafe (across from Cherrydale Hardware on Lee Highway) is a newly-opened restaurant run by an Aghan family. It's casual, meaning that you order and pay at the counter then find a seat and wait for your food at the table, but the quality is great, and the owners are really trying to make the dining experience good.

The menu is mostly Afghan cuisine but also has some Indian and Lebanese style dishes. There are good vegetarian options, and all of the main dishes come with two sides, rice, and bread (this is a ton of food). Not all of the items listed on the menu are currently available... The owner told us that the kitchen is smaller than he had expected, and they're still figuring out how to prepare some of the items quickly.

When I think of Afghan food, kabobs and qabuli pallow generally come to mind. Other dishes are sabzi (a cooked spinach dish like saag), and Afghan style nan. Kite Runner Cafe does these well.

It does take the kitchen a little while to prepare the food, so if you're doing carry-out, you'll probably want to call in your order ahead.
