The Curious Grape has been my favorite wine store for years, even after I moved out of Northern Virginia, so, when they opened a restaurant, I had high expectations. They managed to exceed these expectations, providing a unique and enjoyable dining experience. First, the restaurant is open and welcoming, with the music and ambient noise at just the right level to have an easy conversation with fellow diners without hearing the next table. The wait staff were cheerful, knowledgeable and seemed genuinely happy to be there. They were attentive without rushing us and made excellent recommendations on menu items. Then, there are the clever wine pairings on the menu, with 1/2 glass servings of wine so we could match our wine with each course. Even the entrees allowed for 1/2 portions for those of us who enjoy a several course meal but can never eat those huge portions served in many restaurants.

The highlight, however, was the food. We started with the braised wild boar empanadas (paired with a glass of full-bodied red wine), which was incredible - a light pastry surrounding several bites of spicy, tender meat. The only thing that consoled me when they were gone was my butter poached lobster entree (paired with a glass of full-bodied white wine), with very light agnolotti and a sauce that was superb. The 1/2 portion was just right and for once I had room for desert. The fresh fig tart was unforgettable - the combination of the tart and blue cheese ice cream was simply delicious. At one point, the owner came over to see how we were doing and she was her normal warm, welcoming and genuinely interested self - kudos to her for creating a fabulous dining experience!

We made a last minute decision to celebrate our anniversary at the new Curious Grape location in Shirlington. What a great surprise... First we participated in a wine tasting --- nice way to start out. The menu is set up with coordinated wine--- options for 3 & 6 oz pours. So with each dish we tried a different wine. We started with the fried oysters--- make sure you try them there are only 3 but they burst with flavor along with a kimchi type relish. We then had gnocchi (amazing) and scallops (OMG) we opted to get two full size portions and shared both. It was so good we couldn't stop and had a cheese plate for dessert--- good but not as good as the real desserts looked. Go, enjoy, and enjoy a wonderful new take on an evening out for a reasonable price ---- app, 2 entrees, cheese plate and 8 glasses of wine--for $120.

This was my first time visiting the restaurant (although I have been there to buy wines and also have a cup of coffee and a cookie!) The creativity in the kitchen is amazing. The blending of flavors, combined with their wine suggestions, absolutely divine. What a Treasure! I applaud the chef and the sommelier and can't wait to see what they offer in the future.

There is so much to like about this new addition to the Shirlington dining scene. Start with a core of excellent wines presented by a knowledgeable staff, add a great selection of cheeses, and round it out with a creative kitchen which presents beautiful and flavorful dishes and you have a hit. Wines can be had as full or half pours and entrees can be ordered as small portions. This is an ideal way to try two dishes that appeal or just right when you aren't famished. In three visits there hasn't been a miss on the menu and since the menu changes there is always a reason to stop back, for the familiar or the new.
