“Easy to get to DC - great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2011

We spent a few days at the Marriott Crystal Gateway hotel during the NCAA March Madness. Several of the participating teams stayed on property, and the lobby was ALWAYS busy but we were never disturbed by the groups in the hotel.

Due to Marriott elite status, we had access to the Concierge lounge though our room was not on the same floor. The evening spread was nice, and the honor bar was available until 10 p.m. The breakfast was a basic continental: breads, fruits, yogurts, cereals, juices. A pan of scrambled eggs was also in the buffet.
Water and cokes are always available however, not after breakfast on Friday. The room is locked throughout the weekend. The price of the room per night was pricey enough, so it would have been nice to have beverage service throughout the weekend.

The room was nice, no great views but you are in a basic business park with many high rise apartment complexes.

There are lots of restaurants within walking distance, along with a Costco, and shopping mall. Anything you would need to purchase while traveling is easy to find.
Within the walk to the Metro, we passed a Rite Aid pharmacy and convenience store, along with restaurants and a Dunkin' Donuts.

A short Metro ride into the city puts you in the middle of all of the museums and sights of DC. A similar cab ride costs less than $10.

Ask about the airport shuttle which is complimentary.

A group of seven colleagues from a midwestern university, we made reservations at the hotel in early January for our March 15 trip to Washington DC. Received a confirmation in return - with the conventional reminder that we'd be charged for the room if we didn't show up. We arrived at the hotel at noon on the day in question -- only to be told that they'd given our rooms away to another group of travelers whose flights were delayed. The hotel made no attempt to notify us that they were breaking our reservation. They'd 'made arrangements for us' at a Residence Inn that they claimed was 5 blocks away. It wasn't -- it was a mile and a half away from the Marriott and from the Metro. Our tightly organized schedule of meetings collapsed once we added the shuttle vans to and from the metro to our travel time. Clearly, our midwestern business was a low priority for the hotel.

The Marriott Gateway Crustal City is one of two Marriotts in the Crystal City zone of Arlington VA. Although the other Marriott is a higher tier, it would be hard for it to top this one for doing what Marriott does best for business travelers. Although I was not on a business trip, the room layout would be the envy of other businesshotels. Things are located close together with plenty of outlets, plenty of lighting and even RCA jacks if you at the desk if you wanted to view a video on the flat screen TV. Everything was up to date around the room and clean. This is the kind of hotel where you want to stay for conferences or standard busiess trips.

I last stayed here 10 years ago, when an unpleasant experience and poor customer service left me to avoid this hotel indefinitely. I even joined another hotel chain. Recently, I have noticed the hotel is among Tripadviser's top ranked hotels in Arlington. This current stay is only more than 12 hours, not even time to have breakfast. So far so good. The hotel can still be reached from the Metro via the mall and underground tunnel. Check-in was fast and friendly. I was given a junior suite, courtesy of my elite status at Marriott. It was totally unexpected, made me feel like a very special guest. And Marriott also threw in free high-speed Internet. Made me feel special. I certainly will be back at this hotel for a few more nights.

I rarely take time to write a review of a chain hotel, since they are mostly consistently the same from location to location, but the service in the reception area was just so extraordinary that I feel compelled. I spent three nights there and I was consistently greeted by friendly and helpful staff. It was almost impossible for me to walk through the lobby without being warmly greeted. On several occasions staff walked up to me and asked if I needed anything. I am not a rock star, but I sure enjoyed the treatment.

If there was anything that was better than our clean, comfortable, quiet room during our stay at the Crystal Gateway, it could only be the attentive, courteous and friendly staff that consistently made our visit even more wonderful. This hotel has easy Metro access, is beautiful and well maintained, and made our anniversary trip absolutely perfect.

I've stayed here for business several times. It's a typical Mariott, so it's pretty nice, and the location is very convenient since it's right on the Metro. Service is always very good, and the hotel shuttle is convenient. I love Mariott beds, and these are no exception. Housekeeping seems to do an especially good job- better than the average Mariott.

I have a few complaints. First, the tv channel selection is terrible. No Travel Channel, Food Network, HGTV, ABC Family, Bravo, and the list goes on and on. Second, the towels are kind of cheap for the hotel quality. I've had better towels at Holiday Inn Express. Usually they provide 3 full size towels, and of these, two are very thin while the third is actually nicer. I think they must have newer and older towels in the collection. My final complaint is that the smaller rooms don't have refrigerators.

As with all Mariotts, breakfast is not included, but if you have access to the concierge lounge, you get free breakfast in the morning and food (a buffet of veggies, cheeses, etc. with one more substantial dish per night, served with only very small plates) in the evening.

The fitness center was under renovation last time I went and couldn't be used, which was disappointing. Apparently you could use one across the street or somewhere, but I didn't want to do that. It looks like the renovated gym will be very nice though.
