Owner description: The pre-Civil War residence of legendary Confederate general Robert E. Lee, this Greek revival mansion was taken over by Union troops, and the estate was used to bury the war dead. Overlooking the Potomac and the grounds of what is now Arlington National Cemetery, the home has been restored as a memorial to Lee.

It must have been a difficult decision for Lee to submit his resignation, but he would not fight against his homeland of Virginia. After the war, he and his wife returned to their much loved home only to find the spacious front yard now dotted with graves. It's a beautiful place to see, but it's so sad.

Definitely head to the Arlington House if you visit Arlington National Cemetery. The view of DC is excellent and the renovations are making the house even nicer. I wish it would have been finished, but next I'll spend more time at the actual house

We were disappointed to find this house stripped of its furnishings and undergoing repairs. However, the view from the lawn overlooking Washington DC are unbelievable. It just took so long for the shuttle to come that everyone was hot and fussy by the time we were picked up.

Although the house was being worked on, this stop is at the highest point in the DC area. Excellent photo stop.

Very nice view of the city from outside. The house itself is under renovation and has no furniture inside.
