This is but one of the awe inspiring monuments in the Washington DC area - this one on the Arlington side of the Potomac, next to the National Cemetery. The sculpture of the marines planting the flag at Iwo Jima is not only a powerful reminder of our hard-won victory against the Japanese in WWII, but in the faces of each individual soldier you can practically hear their individual stories of a war gone on too long, and at great expense. I photographed many angles and was stunned at what they revealed when I looked at them later. This is really a monument worth studying for the many stories it has to tell. In addition, come around sunset and get a glorious view of the city.
