Owner description: Commonly called the "Iwo Jima Memorial," the statue is a depiction of the famous raising of the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima and is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives defending that flag.

This memorial is one of the few that you can drive to and park for free. The memorial itself is large and beautiful. All the memorials are open 24/7 so feel free to see this at any time of the day or night.

Every Tuesday during the summer the Marine Corps has a sunset tattoo (concert and silent drill demonstration).

This is always a great event to visit, (especially if you are a tourist visiting the area). The summers in DC are HUMID, so plan to be a bit wet in the heat.. but consider bringing a picnic dinner and enjoying the memorial with concert!

Viewing the statue of the U.S. Marines raising the flag on Mt. Surabachi on Iwo Jimi is well worth the 15 minute walk from Arlington National Cemetery. It is an uplifting experience.

Everything is DC is huge, the Memorial is not easy to get to, but well worth the effort. I saw it while on a night Monument tour and it takes your breath away.

The most famous of all Military Memorials. Many events held there. Tuesdays, the silent drill team might even show up! Take your camera.
