Owner description: Commonly called the "Iwo Jima Memorial," the statue is a depiction of the famous raising of the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima and is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives defending that flag.

PROS: free 1 hour parking; moving memorial; right by tulip gardens; situated in a hill which offers great background views of the Capitol, Washington monument and Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson memorial; right beside Arlington cemetery. The expansive lawn offers great spots for a picnic.

CONS: about a 30 minute stop.

Who doesn't love our beloved Marine Corp. This memorial is the statue of the Marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima. This is in Arlington and close to the cemetary, its not in DC so if you are taking th Metro to Arlington, VA you can visit the Marine Corp memorial, Arlington Cemetary and the Pentagon all within a few train stops. All worth it....

My husband served in the Marine Corps from 1989-1993. This memorial is beautiful. Such an awesome place to visit. So thankful for our military. Moved by the detail in this piece!

This is a can't miss site. A great day plan is to stop here first, then go to Arlington National Cemetery, which is right next door. After that, go to lunch at the Pentagon Mall and drive next door to the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. I have been to the Iwo Jima Memorial several times and each time, it moves me to tears. I highly recommend reading Flags of Our Fathers before you see this memorial. It will mean that much more to you, especially when your 17 year old son can name each soldier in the statue by name.

I loved the interactive features and the short movies. I tried to pick up the 60 lb pack that Marines must carry and listened to a simulation of a drill sergeant with her recruits. I especially enjoyed the corridor on the Vietnam War and the use of helicopters.
