Very large statue and nice views of washington dc in the distance, should be easy parking fro the most part but a walk to get close to the memorial 50+ yards

Many people miss the Iwo Jima Memorial, but everyone should see it. It's very impressive, and the sculpture of the men raising the flag is amazing. If you have read the book, Flags of Our Fathers, then you should definitely see the memorial. The book details the lives of the men in the sculpture. It makes a nice stop after visiting Arlington National Cemetery which is nearby. My husband and I also love to visit it because my father-in-law was the crane operator in 1954 who put the sculpture in place on the memorial!

Go to the Marine Memorial for sunset if you can squeeze this into your agenda. The pagentry and views are a highlight of any visit to the Nation's Capital. It's like the Air Force Memorial, there is nothing else right there, but you are close to Arlington Cemetary. It's a much better memorial than the AF Memorial.

I've driven past and run past this memorial so many times that it becomes too familiar. However, it is agreat reminder of the sacrifice that the USMC made in WW2 in the Pacific theatre in particular but also on current operations in Southern Afghanistan alongside their British, NATO and Afghan allies.

Tuesdays in the summer the Corps marches, plays music and has a silent drill team that is superb. This is a great monument with lots of room for the kids to run around. Or, go to the end of the MC Marathon as the runners gasp around the monument and get a "well done sir or maam" from a handsome Marine.
