“Brilliant and Funky”
Reviewed November 5, 2008

We opted for the upgrade offer which was sent to us by the hotel (via email) before our stay. When we arrived, the upgrade cost an additional $40 or so dollars and was worth every cent. The suite was huge, we had a personal note from the manager awaiting us with complimentary mineral water and a cheese and fruit platter.

The two-room suite was huge, very child friendly and extremely funky. The staff were amongst the friendliest and most genuine we have ever met. Our doorman was so lovely and even gave our 2 yr old son a toy of his choosing from a special 'treasure chest'.

It was extremely child-friendly, without losing any of its 5-star charm or class. Excellent location in historic Alexandria. Can't be beaten. We loved it!!

We stayed with our 8-year-old daughter for 8 nights on a DC-area vacation while our older daughter attended a week-long leadership forum. The hotel has been refurbished in the classic Kimpton style; very nice. The staff was very friendly, though a little bit unpolished and uninformed for the 4-star rating. The location can't be beat, unless getting on the Metro before 10:00 is a priority, because the free King Street Trolley doesn't start running until then. It does run until 10:00 pm. It's location in the epicenter of Old Town Alexandria near the waterfront is very appealing. Walgreen, CVS and Safeway very close, many, many restaurants of all varieties nearby; Thai, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Indian, French.... you name it. Decent tourist shopping nearby as well. Hotel had a nice large room with good beds and a nice big flat screen TV that we turned on once in the week. Too busy! Good pool, though the presence of the lifeguard was odd, because he sat and watched a movie one night and the other seemed bugged by the actual presence of people. Instead of using the valet parking ($20/day) we parked in the Courthouse garaged across the side street for $8/day.

Only one displeasing incident of note. Beginning at about 10:30 pm one night a dog up the hall began barking incessantly every time someone would walk past the room (which was often, because he was near the elevator) I called front desk at 11:00 and heard a staff member arrive at the scene and say, "well, there's nothing we can do until daddy comes home." By 11:30, the barking continued, so I pulled on my pants and went down to the front desk and said, "I know that in this particular instance there is nothing you can do. But I think this is generally a problem because Hotel Monaco's market themselves so aggressively to the pet-owning public. I think that you should therefore be extra-communicative with your pet-owning guests about what's okay and what isn't, perhaps even get cell-phone numbers so that if there are complaints you can contact them." They offered one free night of valet parking for my trouble. Of course, the people shouldn't leave their dog alone, but this seems to be a pattern at Hotel Monaco's that needs to be addressed.

This was not a deal-breaking event, and we had a great time overall. If you're looking for a nice hotel in the DC area at a much better price than in the city, this one is a very good choice. And you can be in the city in a flash. We were amazed at how easy it was to get around, at least this time of year.

Loved everything about this gem. Perfect location, excellent service, very friendly staff and the imaginative decor is bold without sacrificing charm and warmth. Hated to leave to stay in D.C. Next time will book entire week in Hotel Monaco and travel to D.C. by cab when needed. Would recommend this to all ages...expecially great for animal lovers.

I booked my stay as a "hot deal" on the Kimpton web site or probably could not have afforded such luxury. This might have been the best hotel room I have ever had -- huge room, including a chaise longue, exotic and warm decor, comfy bed and linens, flat screen tv, free wireless, gorgeous bathroom and really the latest technology on everything -- including dimmers on the lights. The lobby is pretty but small, and the restaurant is worth a visit. Nice staff, with umbrellas to use on a rainy weekend. Fabulous location, and a free trolley goes to and from the Metro. A few caveats -- they can't do the typical Kimpton wine hour here because, well, it's Virginia. There's not much street parking, but you can save the $20 valet fee by putting the car in the outdoor lot on St. Asaph, a few blocks north of King. And, pets are welcome, so a large barking dog down the hall provided an 8 am wakeup call on a rainy Saturday when it would have been perfectly fine to sleep in. There was no going back -- the barking went on for a good hour. I hope those guests got kicked out, there's just no excuse for that. I'd definitely stay here again.

My husband and I stayed in the Loft Suite at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria on our wedding night. The suite was breathtaking- very nicely decorated and full of amenities, down to multiple plasma TVs. The bathrooms and bed linens in particular were very nice! The staff was incredibly friendly and the rest of the hotel was beautifully decorated as well.

The only problem we ran into was that the air conditioning was not functioning properly in the hotel. The elevators felt like they must have been 115 degrees! Our room felt like 100! My husband and his groomsmen got ready in the suite before the wedding- it was exceptionally hot for June, with the a heat index of about 108, so to have the room sweltering on top of the outside heat made it miserable. The guys were sweaty and miserable in their tuxes!

Maintenance said they were working on the problem- it was slightly cooler when we arrived after the wedding, but not much- it was still incredibly hot.

Otherwise, excellent stay, stunning hotel, great experience!

  • Liked — Spunky yet elegant decor, fun atmosphere, great accomodations and great customer service!
  • Disliked — Horrible air conditioning!

Before Old Town Hotel became Hotel Monaco, I had stayed at the hotel previously and had a great stay. The hotel is in a great location right in the middle of Old Town Alexandria. My girlfriend and I were excited to stay in the new Hotel Monaco hotel. The hotel is very decorative and modern. The bed was comfy and the staff appeared to be friendly. The LCD TV and furniture were also nice. Those are the positives.

The room that we stayed in had gnat problem which was annoying. The room we stayed in was also a lot smaller than we had expected.

I hate how they force you to use Valet in their parking garage and charge you $20 dollars a night to park there! Before at the previous hotel, it was $7 a night and you could park your own car. Their valet staff damaged my car while in their care, but I did not notice it until after I had left the hotel. The reason? The valet staff had purposely parked my car at an angle in front of the hotel, extremely close to the vehicle in front of it, so that I wouldn't notice the damage even if I had looked. Of course there was nothing that they could do about it after the fact saying that they could not prove that they did the damage to my car.

If I stay in Alexandria again, I will make sure to stay in another hotel...

Everything about The Hotel Monaco in Alexandria was wonderful. The room was large and airy, huge flat screen tv, huge and unique bathroom, and very very clean. The staff were very attentive, friendly and efficient toward all their visitors' needs. Very impressed. The location is excellent, right on the main street close to all eating establishments, shopping and a fantastic marina and boardwalk. Can't say enough about this place. Great place and a great time was had by all (organized bus tour of 50 people).
