“Fantastic Visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2011

When we checked in we were immediately and courteously greeted by the valet staff (great job guys) I felt like a VIP. Then we were welcomed at the front desk by Erika with a warm smile and hello. She immediately upgraded us which made our stay even better. All I can say about the room is WOW.Lots to do in the area of the hotel within walking distance, tourist friendly, King street, Torpedo Factory and African American Heritage Park a must see. Thanks Titus for helping us get around and your friendliness. Would definitely stay again.

Apparently, the only word in the staff’s vocabulary was “no”. I traveled with a friend who had some type of Westin VIP status that allegedly allows for perks including use of a business center stocked with goodies. Was the business center open? No. Could we print from our rooms? No. We had to send our documents to the e-mail address of a hotel staff member in order for the documents to be printed. Was the gift shop open so that we could purchase personal items? No. The hotel alleges that it provides shuttle service to and from the Metro. After calling for a shuttle from the Metro, did the shuttle ever show up as we waited in 20 something degree temperature? No. After we returned to the hotel and were ready for dinner, we requested the front desk to call us a cab. Did the cab show up after an hour? No. I wanted French toast for breakfast as it was on the menu. Did they have any? No. There were probably some other annoying things about this place, but I’ve blocked out the memories. I am so annoyed that I don’t even feel like finishing this review. Lame hotel, wouldn’t return. Unless it were free.

Our sincere apologies. While we are extremely disheartened to hear of your experience, we appreciate you letting us know where we can make improvements. Our hotel was certainly experiencing a much quieter time during the holidays, with less staff available, however it was not our intention that you should have felt any less than our full attention during your stay. Although our club lounge and gift shop were closed at this time, the amenities provided in these areas should have been available to you. For example, in lieu of club lounge access, you would normally receive breakfast coupons to our restaurant. To complement the gift shop, a local sundries store is available in close proximity to the hotel. We would welcome the opportunity to talk with you personally regarding your other experiences. The most direct way to do that is to call 703-826-8647 and ask for Rich Casale, General Manager. We look forward to receiving your call.

Even though my company was covering my expenses, I am going to avoid not just this hotel, but any Starwood Hotel if I can, after my stay here. First, they block cell phone reception in the building, so you either have to use their phones or go outside. Second, they charge for internet access in the business center as well as in the rooms (I think it's $10 for 10 or 15 minutes) - it's $1 per page to print out as well. When you turn on the Tv there is a screen trying to get you to pay for more stuff. The walls are REALLY thin and the only reason I got a decent night's sleep is that the hotel was pretty empty. They don't have an automated wake up service, so you have to rely on the staff. One day they were 20 minutes late making the call. We had multiple people checking in on one credit card --it literally took the desk staff 20 minutes to figure out how to put three separate people in three separate rooms and 2 days to get the rooms straight.

“Thank you for the valuable feedback you provided us regarding your stay at The Westin Alexandria noting what areas we can work to improve upon. Our sincere apologies for the service challenges you experienced. While most cell phone providers’ service works well in the hotel, we are aware that there can be reception challenges with one provider in particular that we are working to alleviate in the short term. In room internet is provided at a cost of $9.95 per 24 hours of connectivity. Multiple day packages can be purchased at a discount and complimentary internet is provided in our lobby, restaurant and Starbucks. It appears that the situation with your room billing was handled, however we encourage you to contact our Accounting Department directly at 703-253-8632 if any outstanding issues remain. Thank you again for providing your feedback.”

This is the second stay at this hotel. It is a close walk to the metro, but not so close. That saves you from the noise of Amtrak and metro trains. Amenities were very nice. I felt safe.

I had booked the Westin a bit by mistake, thinking it would be located in Alexandria's lively Old Town. When I arrived on Friday afternoon for the weekend, I realized that the location was dominated by office buildings and the Federal Courthouse, and of course, there was barely any life in the streets on the weekend. Anyway, the staff was very courteous and helpful, the lobby beautiful, and the room (a corner junior suite) spacious, well furnished, and fit for a longer stay. Walking to Old Town Alexandria takes a good 30 minutes, often along busy streets, but the proximity to King Street metro (easy trip to downtown DC) is an asset.

Thank you so much for staying with us, we are pleased to hear of your overall satisfaction with the hotel and staff. We hope to have the opportunity to be of service to you again. Realizing your concern with our location, relative to the heart of Old Town, we encourage you to take advantage of our complimentary on demand shuttle service. Our shuttle service runs regularly from the hotel to Old Town and the King Street metro. Since we border the historic portion of Old Town the shuttle will typically have you to King Street and all of it's shops, restaurants and night life in 5-10 minutes.

Had the opportunity to stay 3 nights here due to a federal meeting held in the hotel. From the moment you walk in the door, the hotel because a scent/fragrance sensitive person's nightmare. Though the smell is pretty, it was too much causing a migraine for 3 days. Even my non-'scent'sitive collegues were bothered by day 2. The price is way too much for a rather basic hotel. Nice feature was that it is reasonably close to a metro station and you feel safe walking to nearby restaurants at nice. Friendly staff.

While the Westin is a very nice hotel, my family and I were disappointed with our stay. When we made our reservations, I was sure to request a crib in the room, but when we arrived there was no record of my request and none were available. We were fortunate enough to bring our own Pack N' Play (just in case) and we were able to use that instead. If we didn't have that in the car though, we would have been forced to buy something.

The room itself was very nice - very trendy and nicely decorated. There wasn't a fan in the bathroom, so it steamed up way too easily, but the bathroom itself was pretty spacious. What my husband and I both found strange, is that no where in the room was a brochure or anything letting tourists know what was in the area, or where we could grab breakfast in the area. We tried walking around for a bit, but we couldn't find anywhere within walking distance to eat with the baby. We ended up having to use room service to order breakfast the next day and it cost over $60 for breakfast for 2. Way too expensive, especially if you consider that we each only got 1 egg, 1 slice of bacon, 1 slice of toast and a glass of OJ and water. I'd have been fuller and happier if we had just found an IHOP somewhere.

All in all, while the hotel itself was very nice, we didn't think it was worth the money we spent for it.
