“Convenient location, clean rooms with POOR sound insulation”
Reviewed August 3, 2010

We made special request while booking the Westin Alexandria on-line: room on a higher floor and late arrival (1 AM) which were acknowledged by the staff. On the hotel's website the text box for Special Request only accepts one short sentence - you have to get crafty to leave more than on request there.
The sound insulation: we have clearly heard our neighbours talking in adjacent room through the washroom wall/door; the elevator bell when it arrives to our floor – this sound , the train signal from the Metro station through the window - all this in early morning. That was very annoying.
Staff was friendly and helpful when giving us directions to cafes and convenience stores but the maids cleaning our room were constantly forgetting stuff: when we arrived we only had one bath robe instead of two and no shower cups. The next evening we returned to the hotel late and discovered there is only one towel and no robes at all (for three of us) - the cleaning ladies forgot to the leave fresh ones. The hotel's shuttle is pretty much at your disposal: it goes wherever and whenever you want and picks you up after a phone call to the hotel - very convenient. There is an inexpensive sandwich shop across the street from the hotel - great sandwiches; and 7-eleven store two blocks away (in case you need to buy milk and such). Both corded and cordless phones in the room were dirty and dusty. The mini bar was empty and concierge gave us the key to use it as a fridge for groceries and fruits. One last thing: beds were very comfortable with two types of pillows and down duvets; not to plush and not to firm, just right. I would strongly prefer to stay in a room with two queen beds instead of two double beds (as it was in my room in Westin Alexandria)

We had three stays here over a seven-week period. Initially we stayed on a Friends and Family rate, but we later switched to a government rate as we got reimbursed for part of the time. And the government rate was the maximum that I would pay for the hotel.
The rooms are nice and always clean, the beds are very comfortable, as usual for a Westin, and the service was friendly. The gym and pool were nice, although I only used the gym. The restaurant was quite good, although oddly the bartender claimed not to be able to make a mixed-juice beverage for me (Hint: pour in one kind of juice, then another.) The location is decent, although a bit further from Old Town than I would prefer. Certainly it is excellent if you have business at USPTO or the Federal courthouse. It was nice to have the free shuttle, although it was indeed a bit erratic in departures, and it stops at 10 pm, I believe. Anyway, the Metro is a short walk away. The location turned out not to be great for our purposes - going up to Arlington - but that's certainly not the Westin's fault. On street parking is free between 5 pm and 8 am weekdays and all day on weekends, a nice bonus for us, as we had a rental car. At other times, it's mainly metered with a two-hour limit.

The service was occasionally a downside. When we first arrived, we were with our dog, and we were assured the "dog welcome package"(bowls, bed), would be waiting for us in the room. It was not, and we had to call four times to get it. We also had to call twice to get robes, and when we did, the wrong items were brought. I got the impression there were very few housekeepers Although the rooms were clean, some days there would be no washcloths, on others no replacement toiletries such as shampoo, and once the robe was taken but not replaced. Also, the door to cabinet that hides the mini-fridge was broken, and we had to call twice to get that fixed. Some of the furniture was a bit dinged, but we did have a very spacious room with two lounge chairs.

Further, the front desk did not always seem to give out full info. For example, we were not told that the passwords for free Internet in the lobby would work in the rooms once you logged on, so instead we spent $40 in internet charges. Also, the staff did not really explain the hours/days of the Executive Club, and oddly, it turned out to be closed Monday morning when you might most need the coffee and breakfast, and was unexpectedly open some evenings. (We had never used this at any Westin.) However, the food in the club was good, and there were a few items suitable for taking "to-go.)

Finally, we were told that our Starwood number was entered into the system, when actually it was not.

Anyway, there were some issues, but most of them are fixable, and for a short business stay it could be quite a convenient and quiet hotel.

The walls are very very thin. We heard our neighbors watching TV and other activities. Accommodations are comfortable, but the location is a little out of the way. The metro is only about a 5 to 10 minute walk and it's about a 15 minute walk into Olde Town.

Decor is modern and clean, but a little bland. Not a bad stay if you can get a deal, otherwise, I would strongly recommend the Hotel Monaco on Kings Street. We had breakfast and the later in the day drinks in their courtyard. Lovely place with incredible service.

What you expect from a Westin Hotel. Very business friendly with professional staff, comfortable rooms. Nice workout room.Several of the conference meeting rooms have excellent views. Our one complaint was that the restaurant and bar had a hard close at 2 for lunch then 11 in the evening--this was a challenge for people who arrived at odd times as there are few restaurants within walking distance and room service is not the best option when holding business meetings.

After unsuccessfully trying to book a room in DC, we decided to stay in Alexandria for a better deal on a room. The Westin Alexandria was a great choice for our trip. It's in a new development and the building itself seems to be almost brand new. The room is what I've come to expect from a Westin. Large, nicely-appointed, and comfortable. The Heavenly Bed was comfortable as advertised, and the shower is worth booking a Westin all by itself. I didn't mark all 5's because of a few small details. On our first and 3rd days, the staff forgot to leave shampoo in the room. Not a big deal, but an inconvenience. The tub did back up a little, although not enough to do anything about. The hotel was quiet our first two nights (a Saturday and Sunday), but we were able to hear some noise on our next two when a couple of conferences had been booked and traffic was up. Also, the other reviewers' complaints about cell phone service were accurate. We were able to get reception, but only if we sat in the chairs backed up against the window. This wasn't a problem for us since were on vacation, but I can see where a business traveler might have a problem.

The staff at the hotel were very pleasant and helpful. The desk clerk gave us a ton of helpful information about the Washington and Alexandria areas when we checked in. The shuttle driver was very friendly and helpful in finding dinner options on King St. A special thanks goes to the night manager who came up after midnight to help us when our toilet decided to stop working.

As far as value, we got a special rate on Expedia, so it was a steal. We had drinks in the bar one night, which were reasonably priced and well-mixed and the hotel brekfast was also quite reasonable, especially for the DC area.

The hotel is conveniently located near the Metro stop, which was perfect for our trip, and there are enough places open for breakfast or a cup of coffee in the morning before heading out. Overall, I was very pleased with our stay and would recommend the hotel to anyone who wanted a pleasant stay near DC.

I've commented in other reviews on this site that hotels in the DC area are often very overpriced. So for this week-long trip I tried staying outside the District, and overall, it was a good experience. The Westin is almost new, and it must be said the beds are exceptional. It's also only a short walk to the King St metro station, from which you can be anywhere in DC in about 25 minutes - and not have to worry about the traffic. King St itself is delightful: lots of good shops, bars and restaurants, ending in the lovely Potomac waterfront.. For me the clincher was the rate I got: just $236 a night, even midweek - much cheaper than a place of equivalent standard in DC. However, this was a pre-paid rate booked about a week ahead: you could pay much more, in which case the location would start to look more inconvenient.

I'll preface this review with the fact that I sleep very lightly when I stay in hotels, so the 'noise' factor may not be an issue for you. I was kept awake most of the night by the sound of the elevator running up and down. At first I couldn't figure out what the noise was - thinking it was intermittent wind (!) but then realized after the drone continued all night long that it was the elevator shaft. I was staying a good few rooms away from the elevators too so I would hate to think what the closer rooms would hear. Therefore, if you wish to stay here and you are a light sleeper then make sure you get a room as far away from them as possible.

I also stayed at this hotel a few months back and had a connecting room - avoid that too if you can! Other than that the hotel is pleasant enough and location is fine.

Oh yeah one last thing....I ordered a glass of milk to the room & it was $8...should have ordered the wine!
