I just returned from a stay in this hotel -- and it's wonderful.

Pros:
- Although it's a major hotel market, the Washington area is known for having almost all pretty shabby properties. This place is NEW, beautifully designed, and nicer than almost anything else in Arlington or in Washington (and by far the best in Alexandria). It's worth the stay out in Alexandria, even if you're going in to DC in the days.
- Stunning lobby and modern, super comfortable guest rooms.
- Great area. King Street in Alexandria is full of character. Lots of shops and some FANTASTIC restaurants. Great place to spend an evening or a weekend day
- Whole Foods Market is about a 2 minute walk away. Great alternative for snacks or meals.
- Food in the hotel was top notch (had evening snack and morning breakfast) and prices were reasonable for the quality and the area.
- Staff was incredibly friendly and eager to please. (Hopefully this isn't just because the place is brand new -- and they can sustain the service level.)

Cons:
- The only major con: my room (621) had an adjoining door to the next room. There seemed to be NO sound insulation -- I could hear EVERY word spoken by the guest next door in her one hour long phonecall. Her voice was crystal clear -- like she was sitting in my room in the chair next to me. **Not all rooms have adjoining doors, so be sure to request one WITHOUT when you check in.**
- The lobby Starbucks isn't open yet! (Was told it won't open til Fall of 2008). Fortunately the hotel serves Starbucks anyway.
- It is a bit of a long hike to King Street, but it's worth it. (10 min walk to the start of the shops/cafes, 35 minute walk to where it ends at the Potomac River)

My room was a deal at $220/night. Once the place is fully up and running, expect normal rates of $300+ here. (DC is one of the most expensive hotel areas in the country, and this is clearly one of the best hotels in the whole area.)

Will definitely stay here again when back in VA or DC!

I stayed at the Westin the second week it was open. The hotel is located at the west end of Old Town Alexandria. A bit of a walk to King Street where there are lots of shops and restaurants and the metro in to Washington. It is across the street from the Federal Courthouse and in an area that seems to clear out in the evenings and weekends.
The decor is modern. The hotel and rooms seem to be geared to the business traveler. My room was a double and just average in size. I had requested a king but the mattresses had yet to arrive. The room contained a service bar, safe, flat screened tv, iron, ironing board, one cup coffee machine (with Starbucks coffee) and wifi hookup. The bathroom had little counter space and the shower/tub combination was nothing special. It was new, clean and the bed was certainly "heavenly".
The food and bar service in the Trademark Bar and Jamison Grille were better than average. Of course, when you are paying $12 for a martini they should be. I ordered room service one evening and the food was poor and ridiculously expensive.
All aspects of customer service were excellent.
I paid $174 plus tax for my room (no doubt an introductory offer) and would definitely stay there again at those rates. I would need to rethink it if I was charged the $399/nt posted on the back of the room door.
As stated in the previous review cell phone service is horrible in the hotel. Could be due to the hi rise buildings surrounding it or the proximity to the courthouse.

A few of us stayed at this property last week and overall had a pretty good experience. As long as a few kinks are worked out, we will definitely be back!

Pros: brand new (= clean), comfortable beds, nice furniture and tv (with many channels), very friendly staff, nice gym/pool, great restaurant (food and service for dinner was wonderful), close to the King St. metro stop, nice lobby, easy check in/out

Cons: NO cell phone reception throughout the entire building!!! (HUGE con), breakfast service at the restaurant is terribly slow and inconsistent, the hotel is still under construction (not all floors are complete including the club floor), it's a bit of a walk to the heart of king street, the bathrooms are small with little counter space, no daily paper (although I saw some rooms did receive one)

It's a nice addition to Alexandria and the surrounding area has a lot of potential (hopefully more restaurants will be added!). With any new establishment, there are issues that will need to be worked out in time (expansion of cell service, training of waitstaff, etc.). But overall we had a good experience!
