“Used to be GREAT - now it is AWFUL!”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

As a local, this used to be my favorite bar - hands down. There was great staff and great management & the food was also pretty decent for bar food. I had a couple of months away and came back to find the manager had left and so did everything else good about this restaurant. The staff is poorly trained and the General Manager is a complete jerk & incredibly unprofessional. Example, I was there with a party of 12 on a Friday night and we ended up with a HORRIBLE server - there was a point when we were a table of 12 with 12 empty glasses. Eventually, a couple of people ended up getting up and going to the bar to grab drinks. When the food came, about 1/2 of the table enjoyed their dish and the other 1/2 were left underwhelmed. At the end of the meal, there was a automatic 18 or 20% gratuity added, which was expected, but in this case we asked to speak to the Manager. The manager came to our table with an attitude, we explained our issues and that not one person at the table thought that the server earned anything over 10% for a tip (& we're all former restaurant workers and great tippers in general) at which point the manager basically told us too bad and ended by saying "if you're so unhappy with the place, how about you not come back again".... You've got it, buddy!

“nice decor, rude staff ruined atmosphere”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

Having gone to Murphy's up the street for years, we thought we'd try this Irish pub for lunch. Room was attractive, although the benches aren't made for short people. Food was okay, but the staff seemed to be having a feud of some sort that poisoned the atmosphere.

We'll stick with Murphy's, which is much more authentic and the staff is friendly.

“Nice location, food, and atmosphere, but service could use some help.”
Reviewed December 27, 2012 via mobile

I was with a large group from work, an we ordered a lot of drinks and food. The staff wasn't very helpful and even argued with what one of my coworkers ordered. Food-wise, everyone enjoyed their appetizers and meals. Also, the house ale is a pretty good beer as well.

“Decent food & tons of noise”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

The ambiance is pure pub, but it is so loud between the patrons and the music (speakers, not live) that you literally have a lean in and speak very loudly to hear at your own table. Makes the meal far from relaxing. Finding a place to park in Old Town is a disaster -- allow an extra 30 minutes to find a spot. Food was pretty good. Ambiance - lacking. Harp Ale in the plastic cup is fine for a frat house. I'd like it a little more upscale when you're paying a healthy price for it.

“Great find in Old Town Alexandria!”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

O'Connells is an original Irish pub which was essentially moved from Ireland to Alexandria. Great food and atmosphere here. A super place to hang out for a couple of hours and not break the bank! Highly recommend.
