What separates Fireflies from places further north on Mt. Vernon Street is that its night crowds are almost always modest. They do their most business during weekend brunch and then early evenings, serving a high proportion of families with young children. Kids get their mac and cheese meals, while Mom and Dad get to "go out" with their kids in a safe environment to gather with friends for craft beer and live music.
For those without child, later at night offers the same food and drink (and free popcorn) in a setting that's mellow enough to actually hear the friends at your table. How rare these days to be at a bar that isn't blaring loud music. A drawback of though is that this is not their most profitable time period. They say they close at midnight on weekends but in my experience they are 'closing up' much sooner. I know Del Ray is not a late night area, nor should it be, but it would be nice if a place or two stayed open just a little later on weekends.
The beer selection is impressive. Unfortunately, it is also expensive for a casual pub unless you order PBR, and even that is $3.50 if I remember correctly.
The food is better than typical bar food. The burgers and pizzas are tasty, creative and well sized for one hungry person. If you do not want red meat and fries, they have veggie burgers and vegetable substitutes as sides.
