Attraction details
Owner description: Two houses on the property: 1. Woodlawn is a house that was built on George Washington's property for his step-granddaughter Nelly and her husband Lawrence. Starting off as 2,000 acre plantation built in 1800, the house went through a number of interesting owners before becoming the first site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. 2. Frank Lloyd Wright is practically a household name these days, but this small Usonian house was a unique design of his. Originally built in 1940 in Falls Church, VA; this house is a true example of preservation-in-action!

“Loved it!”
Reviewed July 28, 2014

We enjoyed a great tour of both Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey. The guides were very informative and more than accommodating. Each site is architecturally fascinating despite being from different eras, and because of the distance between them, they do not interfere with each other. Both are well-kept and less traveled than other major historic sites in the area, but that does not detract from their importance! More people should visit these historic gems!

“Good afternoon and tours”
Reviewed July 12, 2014

Both are completely different houses but nice they are in same location..both are interesting. We visited Friday afternoon with 3 kids ages from 5-12. Everyone was entertained and cannot believe how kids were interested in FLW house. I think it was so different and time capsule like they were very intrigued and good guide. Then the Woodlawn plantation was great too. After our miserable trip to Mt Vernon the month before (when we paid too much) to be pushed through the house with no explanation this made up for it! We got to ask questions about Washington family and our guide was awesome. Took extra time on tour to show us things, gave kids extra attention and was accommodating since tours are on every hour and we were pressed to time to get back before rush hour. Only negative comments is hard to find and traffic can be bad. But they said they were going to work on removing trees and signs so visible from main road. Otherwise great afternoon.

Thank you for your compliments. Sorry for the difficulties in finding our site. Unfortunately, with the construction on route 1 our new entrance has not been reflected in most GPS devices. Hopefully they will remedy this soon!

“Don't miss it”
Reviewed July 7, 2014 via mobile

Tucked away on the plantation is one of the architecturally most interesting places in DC. It's a fascinating view into Lloyd-Wright's work, so thought through and so beautiful in all its simplicity.

“Two slices of history in one location.”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

I have done this tour 3 times when I have out-of-town visitors. Very close to Mt. Vernon which is so crowded- this tour is usually small and personal. If you love historic architecture of any kind this is the place to visit. The Frank Lloyd Wright designed Pope-Leighey house is classic FLW while the large, grand Woodlawn plantation is a beautiful restoration similar in style to Mt. Vernon. The guides to both tours are very informative and always seem to enjoy questions. Tickets are available at the plantation and are extremely reasonable. Just a great way to spend some time!

Thank you so much for your kind words. The drastic difference between the houses helps me appreciate different things about each style.
