Owner description: A Georgian mansion built in 1753 by merchant and City founder John Carlyle. Five governors and General Braddock met here to discuss funding the French and Indian War. This historic meeting influenced the call for American independence in the 1770s, and sparked the concept of taxation without representation. Daily tours, youth programs, special events, exhibits, and lectures offer visitors a chance to experience eighteenth century life. Tues.-Sat. 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sun. noon-4 p.m. (tours on the hour and half hour, last tour at 4).

If you like old homes and/or history you should visit the Carlyle House.

The tour begins in the basement were you watch a history of the house and the Carlyle family. This was a very nice touch and made the rest of the tour so much more enjoyable since we knew the backstory of the family who once lived there.

The house itself is beautiful. We got to visit all but one of the bedrooms. Our tour guide was very infromative and knowledgeable.

I would highly recommend touring the Carlyle House if you are visiting Alexandria.

Passed by while we were on our Food Tour and also one of the highlights during our Ghost Tour. One of the prominent figure why Alexandria is what it is today

I just attended a wedding at the Carlyle House. It was in the garden under the gazebo. There were about 60 in attendance, and I would say that was pushing it for the number who could be seated and still see. The setting was lovely but with the jets approaching DIA (two or three during the ceremony), as well as an occasional motorcycle roaring down a side street it was difficult to hear at times. A portable sound system for the couple and minister would have helped. The weather that evening was perfect, but I would have a back-up plan. The reception was on an outside porch and the service was great. For a small intimate wedding this is a beautiful location - but be aware of the noise issues.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your experience at a wedding at Carlyle House. It is a beautiful location for a wedding and we’re glad you enjoyed your experience. We will be sure to recommend our brides and grooms consider the noise of Old Town while planning their ceremonies. We hope you will be able to return in the future for a full tour of the museum.

I had my wedding here in the garden after seeing it listed as a good outdoor spot to have a wedding in the Washington area. It's great for a small wedding of 5 or under but their max is 100 which I think is pushing it. Beautiful garden in the back too.
